이번주 주제는 water burial 입니다.
조금 무거운 주제이군요. 내일은 국토방위에 목숨을 바친 이의 충성을 기념하는 날인 현충일이니
한번쯤 생각해보고 지나가도 좋은 주제인 듯 합니다.
처음에 제목과 그림만 봤을때에는 바다에 유해(遺骸)를 뿌리는 장면이 떠올랐는데
스크립터를 읽으니 조금 다른 의미의 water burial이더라구요.
스크립터를 따라가면서 주제를 풀어나가보겠습니다.
[Burial & cremation]
Burial is when a body is put into the earth and cremation is when a body is burnt.
▶ burial의 문제점
a coffin ( or a box to put the body in and a grave)과 매장을 위한 공간(땅)
That’s the place the coffin and body go into.
coffins are most often made of wood.
In the US they use four million acres of forest every year just to make coffins.
And as for graves, cemeteries are beginning to get overcrowded
매장은 토장(土葬)이라고도 하며 매장 풍습은 인류가 집단생활을 하면서부터 시작되었을 것으로 추정되며, 유럽에는 구석기시대에 매장이 있었다는 증명도 있습니다.
우리나라도 선사시대 이전부터 매장한 사실이 각처에 있는 고인돌로 미루어 짐작할 수 있습니다.
매장을 하는 이유는
지하에 저승이 있습니다는 신앙적 이유, 사자(死者: 죽은 사람)를 겁내어 관계를 끊기 위하여,
움집[竪穴住居]생활의 유풍에서 또는 단순히 위생적인 면에서 등 여러 해석이 있습니다.
스크립트에서 설명했듯이 매장에 사용되는 관의 주 재로가 나무여서 수목의 과다한 사용, 그리고 매장용으로 쓰여지는 토지의부족등의 이유로 최근 화장을 많이 하는 추세이고 묘지를 사용하지 않고자연장을 많이 행해지고 있습니다.
▶ cremation 문제점
cremation, there’s no space needed. And they burn gas to dispose of the body. That’s got to be better. But
during the process, a number of toxins can be emitted into our environment, including mercury from dental fillings.
Cremation also has a carbon cost.
With the energy used to process one body, you could actually heat a home for the best part of a week in winter
So cremation can release toxins(or poisons) into the environment and it comes with a very high energy cost
시신을 관에넣고 땅에 매장하는 방벙의 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 방법이 cremation입니다.
그렇지만 이 방법도 유해가스로인한 환경오염과 화장시 사용되는 에너지비용이라는 문제점이 있습니다.
여기서 잠깐 ~ carbon cost 에 대해 알아보면 ^^
석유와 가스, 석탄 같은 화석연료를 연소시켜 에너지를 얻는 모든 인간 활동을 통해 배출된 온실가스(greenhous gas)로 지구온난화가 발생합니다.
지구온난화가 지속되면서 기록적인 폭염이나 대가뭄, 홍수, 슈퍼태풍 같은 기상 이변이 늘어나고 지상 오존 농도 또한 높아집니다. 증가하는 기상이변은 재산 손실을 초래 , 노동자의 건강을 위협해 생산성을 떨어뜨릴 가능성이 크며 변하는 기후에 맞는 품종이나 농법 등을 개발하지 않을 경우 곡물의 생산성 또한 떨어질 가능성도 높아집니다.
지구온난화로 인한 기후변화가 지속될 경우 우리 사회는 많은 비용을 추가로 부담해야 합니다.
이산화탄소 1톤이 대기 중으로 배출됐을 때 사회가 1년 동안 부담해야하는 경제적인 비용을 돈으로 표시한 것을 ‘이산화탄소의 사회적 비용(SCC, Social Cost of Carbon)’이라고 합니다.
반대로 생각하면 이산화탄소 배출량 1톤을 줄일 경우 얻을 수 있는 경제적인 이득이 될 수도 있다. 정부나 정책결정자들은 SCC를 이용해 이산화탄소 배출이 경제에 어느 정도 영향을 미치는지 산출을 하고 또 그에 맞는 대책을 강구하게 됩니다. SCC가 커지면 커질수록 경제에 미치는 영향이 크다는 것을 의미하기 때문에 최근 국가들은 온실가스 감축이나 기후변화에 대한 정책이 우선순위가 올라가고 있는 추세입니다.
Water burial
위의 일반적 cremation 방벙의 문제점을 해결한 water burial 방법을 소개하고있습니다.
This is where the body is put into an alkali solution and heated to 150 degrees centigrade. This breaks down the tissue and leaves only the skeleton.
huge advantages over cremation
Well for one thing, it takes only 4 hours to finish. It follows the same process as when a body decomposes, but quicker.
It uses much less energy. Each body is weighed and then the computer calculates exactly how much of everything is needed.

All that’s left at this point is a brittle skeleton and any artificial implants that they may have had in their body – and they come out almost as good as new.
what happens to the skeleton?
It gets ground up into dust and put in a jar to give to the family – exactly the same as a traditional cremation.
water burial (Alkaline hydrolysis, also called biocremation and/or resomation)
Process
The process is based on alkaline hydrolysis: the body is placed in a chamber that is then filled with a mixture of water and lye, and heated to a temperature around 160 °C (320 °F), but at a high pressure, which prevents boiling. Instead, the body is effectively broken down into its chemical components, which takes about three hours.
이 과정을 통해 녹갈색의 착색 된 액체 (아미노산, 펩타이드, 당분 및 염분을 포함 함)와 손으로 쉽게 분쇄될 수있는 부드럽고 다공성인 백색 뼈의 잔유물 (분쇄기가 더 일반적으로 사용됨)이 형성되어 통상 "재"라고 불리는 것은 고인의 가족에게 되돌려집니다. 액체는 위생 하수도 시스템을 통해 또는 정원이나 녹지에서의 사용을 포함하여 다른 방법을 통해 처분된다고 합니다.
이 방법은 일반적 cremation시 사용되는 에너지의 1/8만 필요하고 이산화탄소 오염물질을 적게 발생시켜 많은 환경생태운동단체들로부터 추천되고 있습니다.
또한 수은배출도 없다고 합니다. 영국의 일부 화장장에서 이미 대안으로 시행하고 있으며 애완동물의 화장의 대안방법으로도 쓰이고 있다고 합니다.

마지막으로 water burial의 또하나의 잇점을 소개하고 있네요.
There’s even talk of sending the implants to the developing world, where they can benefit populations that don’t have access to them, because they’re very expensive.
Implants are artificial additions to the body, such as plastic hips or an artificial heart. And they’re clean! They can be recycled and given to someone who needs them!
우리몸에 쓰이는 여러 implant( plastic hips or an artificial heart)들도 재활용이 되나봅니다.
매장, 화장등 여러방법의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 요새 자연장을 많이 시행하고 있습니다
자연장 (自然葬)
화장한 유골의 골분을 잔디,·수목·화초 등의 자연장 상징물의 밑이나 주변에 묻는 장법으로 자연적 상징물에 따라 잔디장, 수목장, 화초장 등으로 분류됩니다.
넓은 의미에서 자연장은 무덤이 아니고 바다나 산 등에 사체나 유회를 돌려보냄에 따라, 자연의 큰 순환 안에 회귀해 나가려는 장송방법입니다.
풍장, 조장, 수장, 화장, 매장, 수목장, 냉동장 등, 자연스럽게 회귀하는 매장하는 방법 전반을 일컫습니다.
서울시에서 운영하는 자연장은 잔디장과 수목장을 시행하고 있다고합니다.
매장·봉안 등 환경 파괴적이고 국토잠식의 폐해가 큰 기존의 장법을 대신 할 자연장은 환경 친화적이고 미래세대와 공유할 수 있는 선진국형 장법으로 공간활용성 등 다른 장법에 비해 많은 우수성을 가지고 있습니다.
자연장은 기존의 장례문화가 남긴 많은 폐해를 시정하기 위해 유골을 안장하여 자연으로 돌아가는 최소한의 설비 이외에 석물 등 인위적인 상징물의 설치를 제한하고 있습니다.
개인적인 표식이나 상징물은 자연장지에 둘 수 없다고 합니다.
자연장은 자연회귀사상을 바탕으로 고인의 유회를 반환하거나 이장하는 기존의 봉안·매장과 달리 한번 유회를 안장하면 반환이나 이장이 허용되지 않는 영구적인 장법입니다.
자연장을 바라는 풍조가 늘어가는 이유는 자연으로 돌아가고 싶다는 생각이 증가하고 있는 것 외에도, 핵가족화나 소자녀화에 의해 지금까지의 가계를 존중한 무덤의 관리체제를 유지할 수 없어지는 등의 사회적인 원인도 생각할 수 있다고 보여집니다.
