A Story about Subway
Many people take the subway every morning to go to work. It is an important source of transportation in many parts of the world.
The first subway in the world opened in London about 150 years ago. It started operation in 1863. It is not only the oldest, but also known as the longest, having 244 miles of track.
In the U.S., Boston was the first city to start operating its subway system in 1897. New York followed, opening its first subway in 1904.
In Korea, Seoul¡¯s subway system opened its first line on Aug. 15, 1974. The line Number 1 (the dark blue line) runs east to west in Seoul. It also connects with the National Railroad that leads to some of the major cities of Gyeonggi Province including Suwon, Uijeongbu, and Incheon Metropolitan City.
Construction of other subway lines followed and new lines were added to the Seoul subway system. Currently, nine major subway lines are in operation. The newest line Number 9 opened in July 2009. It runs south to west of Seoul, connecting the Gangnam area to Gimpo International Airport.
Other major cities in Korea like Busan, Incheon, Daejeon, and Daegu also have subway systems, carrying many citizens to different places every day.
