이 책은 프랑스 Gallimard 사에서 제작된 책을 미국의 cholastic과 영국의 Moonlight publishing에서 영어판으로 출판되고 우리나라에서도 한글로 번역되어 나오고 있습니다. 그런데 이 세가지 모두 사진이나 그림은 똑같은데 내용은 조금씩 다라더군요. 제가 듣기로는 세가지 모두 원본인 프랑스본의 내용과 완전히 일치하지 않는다고 하는군요.
그래서 이것저것 비교해봐서 가장 효과적인 책활용 방법을 생각해볼까 합니다. 내용의 올바른 이해를 위한 것과 올바른 과학적 접근자세에 관해서도 다뤄볼까 합니다. 단 영국에서 나온 첫발견을 중심으로 이야기를 이끌어갈 예정입니다.

[내용설명]
다들 잘 아시겠지만 첫발견의 Egg는 우선 가장 쉽게 볼 수 있는 계란에 대한 설명으로 시작되지요. 우리가 일상에서 자주 먹는 계란의 내부그림으로 시선을 모아서 자연스럽게 부화되어 병아리가 생겨나는 과정으로 이어집니다. 바로 알의 본질이라고 할 수 있는 번식의 이야기로 말이죠. 그리고는 다양한 동물들의 알을 소개하고 있습니다. 그러면서 다양한 환경 속에서 살아가는 동물들의 모습을 엿볼 수 있을 겁니다.
암탉은 수탉이 없이도 혼자서 알을 만들어 낳을 수 있습니다. 하지만 이런 알은 병아리로 부화할 수 없지요. 이런 알을 무성란이라고 합니다. 병아리로 부화할 수 있는 건 수탉과 함께 만든 유성란(종란)이 되겠지요. 그러니까 암닭의 뱃속에 있는 알이라고 해서 다 병아리가 되는 건 아니라는 말씀입니다. 이런 이야기를 영국판 책에선 간접적으로 이야기 하고 있군요. "There can only be a chick inside an egg if a cock has mated with the hen." 바로 이 한문장으로 말이죠.
뱀의 알에 관한 설명에선 미국판에서는 알의 크기가 커진다고 한 반면 영국판에선 알이 길고 끈적거린다고 설명합니다. 사실 뱀이 알을 낳는 장면을 보면 정말 끈적거리는 느낌이 들 것입니다. 하지만 첫발견의 그림을 보고는 그림에서 보인는 그대로 이야기를 하면 좋겠네요. 예를 들면 "새끼 뱀도 어미뱀처럼 혀가 두 쪽으로 갈라졌다"든지, "알이 깨지는 것이 아니라 찢어지는 것처럼 보인다" 이 정도면 되겠네요.
그리고 영국본에선 악어 새끼가 태어나는 그림에서 악어새끼가 태어나자마자 날카로운 이빨을 가지고 있다는 것으로 새끼가 어미를 닮았다는 설명을 더 자세하게 하고 있구요, 파충류가 알을 주로 여름에 낳는 이유에 대한 부연 설명이 없답니다.
그 다음장에선 영국판과 미국판이 전혀 다른 이야기를 하고 있는 부분이 있답니다. 잠자리 그림 다음에 있는 알 그림으로 영국판에선 잠자리의 알이라고 소개하고, 미국판에선 무당벌레의 알이라고 하는 군요. 상황으로 봐선 영국 것이 맞는 것 같지만 어쩜 어떻게 다를 수 있을까 궁금하네요. 참고로 잠자리는 종류에 따라서 알을 물에 낳는 경우도 있고, 잎에 낳는 것도 있습니다.
어류에 대한 설명에선 어류들이 대체로 알을 많이 낳기는 하지만 책에 큰 그림을 차지하고 있는 가오리는 예외거든요. 산란수는 어느 종류도 많지 않아 수개에 그친다고 합니다. 이러한 상세 설명을 영국판에선 하고 있습니다.

M : Look at this picture of egg on the cover. A little chick is about to hatch. 책표지의 알 그림 좀 봐봐. 병아리가 막 알을 깨고 나오려고 하는구나.
M : Do you know how it has grown up in the egg? Let's look inside. 병아리가 어떻게 자랐는지 아니? 어디 책을 보자.
M : The mommy chiken, hen sits on her nest. Do you know why? 엄마 닭이 둥지 위에 앉아 있는데 그 이유를 아니?
C : Yes, the hen keeps her eggs warm. 네, 암탉이 알을 따뜻하게 하려구요.
M : Look at this a tiny chick. We can only see a big eyes. It does not look like a chick. Is it? 이 작은 병아리 좀 봐. 눈밖에 안보이네. 병아리처럼 안보인다 그치?
M : But before long it will be a big chick. Look. It's too big to live inside egg. 그러나 머지않아 큰 병아리로 자랄거야. 봐봐. 알 안에 살기엔 너무 커졌지?
M : So it will break the shell of the egg with its sharp beak and so escape from it. 그래서 병아리로 부리로 알껍질을 깨고 탈출(?)을 할꺼야.
M : Snakes , however, do not have beak. How do they escape from egg? 그런데 뱀이나 악어는 부리가 없는데 어떻게 알에서 나올수 있을까?
M : Some lizards and snakes develop a true tooth that projects outside the row of other teeth, helps the young to hatch, and then is shed. 몇몇 도마뱀과 뱀은 정상적인 치열 바깥쪽으로 진짜 이빨이 발달하여 부화할 때 사용되다가 사라진단다.
[영국판의 원문과 해석]
Look, an egg is wonderful! 보세요. 여기 (멋진) 계란이 있어요.
Packed inside it has a golden yolk, with the egg white all around it. 껍질 안엔 흰자위로 둘러싸인 노른자가 있답니다.
These are hens. They lay the eggs.이것들은 암탉이에요. 암탉은 알을 낳지요.
An egg forms inside the hen. It is covered by a hard shell. 알은 암탉 몸 안에서 만들어지는데 딱딱한 껍질로 둘러싸여있지요.
There can only be a chick inside an egg if a cock has mated with the hen. 만약 암탉의 뱃속에 있는 알이 수탉과 만나서 만들어진 거라면 병아리가 될 수 있을 거에요.
The hen makes a nest to lay her eggs in: while she sits on the nest, the chicks grow inside the eggs. 암탉은 둥지를 만들어 알을 낳고 알 안에서 자랄 때까지 둥지에 앉아 있지요.
The hen sits on the eggs to keep them warm.암탉은 알을 품어 알을 따뜻하게 한답니다.
After only two days, you can see the beginnings of a tiny chick. 이틀이 지나면 아주 작은 병아리가 만들어져요.
The chick grows quickly: soon it will be ready to hatch. 병아리는 빨리 자라요. 그리고 머지않아 부화할 준비를 할 겁니다.
Look! The egg shells are beginning to crack open as the chicks peck at them from the inside. 보세요. 알 껍질에 금이 가기 시작하는군요. 병아리가 알 속에서 부리로 쪼아댑니다.
The chick has hatched! 병아리가 알을 까고 나왔습니다.
It will soon be able to walk and to feed itself. 곧 병아리는 혼자서 걷고 먹을 수도 있을 거에요.
In the farmyard, there are other birds for the chick to meet. 병아리는 농장에서 다른 가금류들도 만날 거에요.
