Is Homework Necessary?

Students do homework almost everyday. But why do you have to do so? Have you ever thought about it as you do your homework? Let¡¯s listen to what some students talk about and think about it.

Tae-young¡¯s Mom: Tae-young, stop playing with your Playstation and do your homework! It¡¯s already eight o¡¯clock. You promised me that you would play with it for only one hour and do your homework, remember? Be a good boy, my dear!

Tae-young: O.K., mom. I will do my homework now. Ah, Jang-soo, I really wonder why teachers give us homework everyday. We study a lot during class and even after school!

Jang-soo: Tae-young, our teachers give us homework so that we can review what we learned during class. We can also find out what we know and what we don¡¯t know as we do our homework. Don¡¯t you think so?

Tae-young: But we take tests regularly. We also have quizzes often. We review what we have studied in order to prepare for those.

Jang-soo: You need to know that not all students study hard to prepare for tests as you do. Without homework, many students may just forget what they learned during class.

Tae-young: Hey, my friend, don¡¯t you know that some students just want to copy others¡¯ homework? That doesn¡¯t help them at all. That is not a good thing to do! Besides, many students get a lot of stress because of homework.

Jang-soo: You have a point. But still, I really think that we need homework. Hurry up. Turn off your Playstation and let¡¯s start with our math homework. Help me with math and I¡¯ll help you with science later.

Tae-young: All right. I¡¯ll bring some potato chips. I feel hungry.
