An Indian-American from South Abington, Pennsylvania won the 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Sukanya Roy took the top place when she correctly spelled the word ¡°cymotrichous,¡± which means having wavy hair.
The 14-year-old girl will take home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. She is the fourth consecutive Indian-American to take the title at the Scripps Spelling Bee. Also, she is the ninth Indian-American to win that prize within the past 13 years.
¡±I went through the dictionary once or twice,¡± she said, ¡°and I guess some of the words really stuck.¡±
She participated in the event three times. In 2009, she tied for 12th place, and in 2010, she tied for 20th place.
A Canadian girl named Laura Newcombe placed second at the competition. The 12-year-old girl was looking to become the first Canadian to win the bee. However, she went out on the French-derived word ¡°sorites.¡±
