Victoria Day in Canada
What do people do?
In some cities, fireworks displays or parades are held to mark Victoria Day. The most notable parade is held in the city of Victoria, British Columbia, which was named after Queen Victoria. Many people gather in parks to enjoy fireworks displays, which are particularly impressive in Hamilton and Toronto.
For many people, the long Victoria Day weekend marks the end of the winter and the unofficial start of the spring or summer season. After this weekend, gardeners can be reasonably sure that there will be no more frost until the autumn so they can sow or plant out delicate crops and plants. For the same reason, people with recreational homes in colder parts of the country often go to them to open them up for the summer. In addition, many amusement parks and outdoor attractions open for their summer season this weekend. Notably, stores on Prince Edward Island are only permitted to open on Sunday between Victoria Day and Christmas Day.
Public life
Victoria Day is a statutory holiday in all Canadian provinces and territories, except New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Most people have a day off work and schools are closed. In some areas, particularly in the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador, stores are closed. However, there are some local variations. Post offices across the whole country are closed. Public transport services may run to a normal or reduced timetable.
Background
Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. Following the death of three uncles and her father, she became Queen of the United Kingdom on June 20, 1837 and reigned until her death on January 22, 1901. Victoria is still the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. During Victoria's life, the British Empire expanded considerably. However, her powers as Queen of the United Kingdom were reduced as the House of Commons became more important and powerful in British politics.
The monarch's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since before the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign. After her death, in 1901, May 25 became known as Empire Day. The sovereign's official birthday was still celebrated, often on the King's or Queen's actual birthday. In 1952, Empire Day was moved to the Monday before May 25 and since 1953, the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II has been celebrated on this date in Canada. In 1958, Empire Day became known as Commonwealth Day, which was moved to the second Monday in March. The Monday before May 25 then became known as Victoria Day, which is a Canadian statutory holiday.
캐나다 데이와 함께 가장 큰 국경일인 빅토리아 데이는 오타와에겐 튤립 축제 마무리에 즈음에 빅토리아 데이를 맞이하면서 늘 튤립을 한번 더 보고자 하는 사람과 놓치지않을려는 사람들로 성황을 이룹니다. 그런 빅토리아 데이에 저희는 올드 퀘벡으로 2박3일간의 여행을 떠났습니다. 튤립, 그거 퀘벡 가서 보지..머. 그카면서요.ㅎㅎ 그랬다가 퀘벡서 튤립 구경 못해 오타와로 돌아와서 후회 무쟈게 했잖아요.ㅠㅠ

이쁜 벽
퀘백시는 퀘백주의 수도이며 몬트리올 다음으로 큰 도시입니다. 올드 퀘백은 북미에서는 유일하게 성벽으로 이루어진 요새화된 도시며 1985유네스코의 세계유산으로 등록된 곳입니다. 17세기 프랑스 탐험가인 사뮈엘 드 샹쁠랭에의해 세워진 구 퀘백은 올해로 창립401 주년이 되며 작년 400주년 기념 행사는 아주 성대하게 치루어졌습니다. 캐나다 CBC방송국 주관으로 카나다 7대 불가사의를 공모햇는데 그곳에서도 6대 불가사의가 이곳 올드 퀘벡입니다. 시 전체가 그냥 그림이고 시 전체가 그냥 노래고 시였습니다.ㅎㅎ
그림을 싸게 판다는 골목...유명 화가들의 그림.가격 만만찮터라고요~ㅎㅎ

역시 밤이면 밤마다 물놀이...지칠때 까지..물놀이...^*^
카메라 뚜껑만 열면 그림이 되는 곳이였습니다. 벽,하늘,강,심지어 구경꾼...도로,바닥에 깔린 돌 까지도 그림 같은 곳이였습니다. 얼마나 이뻤으면 집 앞에도 퀘벡 처럼 돌 깔자고 노래를 부릅니다.남편은. 퀘벡이니 이뿌지 울 집앞에다가 그리하면 돈만 아까울것 같습니다요.ㅋㅋ
3일을 좁은 도시를 뱅뱅 돌았지만 신기하고 귀엽고 사랑스러웠습니다. 중세 프랑스 풍의 도시,그래서 캐나다 속의 프랑스라 불리고 프랑스 밖의 프랑스라는 올드 퀘벡. 오타와가 가진 캐나다 같지 아니한 부드러움과는 선명히 구분되는 또 다른 느낌을 받았습니다. 캐나다 보면 볼수록 아름답고,궁금한게 점점 부풀어 가는 곳입니다. 주 마다 선과 색이 달라 점점 더 많은 욕심을 품게 만듭니다. 어른도,아이들도요. 그래서 3월 부터 바람이 든 우리들의 여행은 6월에도 이어질것 같습니다요~ㅠㅠ

웅웅 딱 2년전 저 사탕젤리로 만든 자전거를 찍었었는데 그대로 있네요..아 너무 사랑스런 퀘백. 정말 변하지 않은 모습에 놀랐었어요..97년이랑 2007년이랑 똑같더라구요. 거리, 상점, 르샤토프롱트낙, 운치있고 멋있었지만 좀 왕따된듯한 느낌이랄까요, 다른 주에 비해..그들의 고집이 왠지 좋더라구요..
