Are Goldfish That Boring?
Goldfish may look brainless, but you don¡¯t have a clue what they see, hear, and think!
I was in Mr. Cregan¡¯s class, in a huge aquarium. It had a huge castle in it, and some snails. I was only a couple of weeks old, and I had been in the classroom since last week. I saw the kids filing in, slightly before 9:00. They took their seats, and started talking. Boy, were they noisy! I heard a couple girls talking about their new clothes, and some guys talking about Runescape. There were only around thirty kids in the class, but it looked like there were a hundred! Then Mr. Cregan came in, holding a cup of coffee. They went quiet, and he did the attendance, calling their names. He even checked me off! Gee, I wish someone would feed me.
¡°You¡¯d better feed Squishy,¡± Mr. Cregan told Clarissa, ¡°He looks hungry.¡±
Talk about wish come true!
I have a stupid name, don¡¯t I? Squishy, huh?
Mr. Cregan had all of the students¡¯ names in a jar. He stuck his hand in the jar, and picked out a name. Oh boy! Did he ever pick out the wrong one!
¡°Chris, you may name the goldfish,¡± he had said.
¡°Ok, I name it Squishy,¡± he had replied without hesitation.
The class almost died with laughter. I laughed with them.
Ok, now back to the present. Clarissa fed me, and I finished the grub in less than half a minute. As soon as I finished my wonderful breakfast, I lost a gold scale. It must be my aging. Two weeks. Do you really think I¡¯m that old? Well, I know I¡¯ll lose all my scales in a year or two, but don¡¯t let it start now!
¡°Take out yesterday¡¯s math test, and turn it to page one hundred five,¡± Mr. Cregan ordered the kids.
The class groaned. I watched as every kid in the class took out their test papers. Most of them were crinkled. I guess I had pretty good eyesight for a goldfish. The teacher loved having me in his class. He blamed me for almost everything that went wrong. I didn¡¯t mind. I was used to it. The students finished the last forty-five pages in the test in three hours.
That¡¯s when Mr. C. said, ¡° Now, before we go to lunch, is anybody not finished the test?
Nobody raised their hand. I wasn¡¯t surprised. They passed their papers to the front of the rows, and Mr. C. collected them. He dismissed the middle group, then the window group, and last but not least, the wall group.
¡°Clarissa, would you feed Squishy again?¡± the teacher asked.
She came over and gave me lunch.
¡®Mmm!¡¯ I thought, ¡®this is better than breakfast!
While they ate lunch, I watched as a snail slowly slid across the aquarium. The little ding-dong went, and four fifths of the class put away their lunch containers, and went outside. The rest of them were girls, and they ate slowly, talking about stuff. I fell asleep then, and woke up when the bell rang. The students¡¯ came in, none of them alone. They did a bit of Spelling and Art until 3:00, when Mr. C. dismissed them. That¡¯s when a group of boys crowded around my tank. They started talking about how weird I was, and made fish faces at me. Boy! If only they could how weird they were! They pressed their faces against the glass, which scared me. I got so scared, I swam into the castle and stayed there.
Mr. Cregan came over, and said, ¡°Leave him alone, or I¡¯ll have to take him over to Mr. Bull¡¯s class.¡± They left me. At 7:00, I fell asleep. I wonder what the students will do tomorrow? Fish >¡¯)333)<
