Seoul Chapter President's Message
Wow, I can't believe it's that time of the year again. Yes, folfs, it's time for the Third
Annual Seoul-Kyonggi-do KOTESOL Conference. This year, it will be held on Sunday.
March 18, 2001 at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul.
We started holding our regional conference two years ago under the leadership of
Douglas Margolis and Lee Mi-Jae to let people interested in English language education
have an opportunity to come together with others in their field. This year, we will expand
beyond that as might be guessed by our theme "TESOL 2001: Education Global
Citizens." To be sure, there will be numerous presentations from scholars about
teaching English. This year, we even expect to have someone coming in from
Louisiana State Univedrsity to give a presentation. However, I believe the role of a
teacher goes beyond merely teaching his or her subject matter. We are living in a world
that is becoming smaller by the day. So, this year, we will have presentations dealing with
globalization and some of its effects. Someone will come from Habitat for Humanity to
make a presentation. In keeping with the idea that we are very fortunate and should try to
help those less fortunate than ourselves, there will also be someone giving a
presentation about spreading the good work of OXFAM Globalization also presents us
with many opportunities and so we hope to have someone from Japan give a
presentation on personal finance. In total, there should be 20-30 presentations this
year.
We're very proud of how far we have come since our first conference and we hope
everyone who attends this year will walk away with a valuable experience. Hope to see
you there.
