* <위씽 기차여행>의 해석판을 기다리셨던 분들 대부분이 바로 이 노래와 다음에 나오는 "Jenny Jenkins"의 해석 때문이 아니었을까 싶습니다. 무슨 뜻인지 도통 모르게 하니까요. 하지만 이 대목에서 저도 할 말이 없습니다. 사실 노래 가사를 재밌게 만들려고 억지로 끌어다 붙인 것들이니 해석 자체가 불가능하다고 밖에 드릴 말씀이 없네요.(이궁. 돌 날라오는 거 아닌지....) '꿍따리샤바라'나 '얼씨구 절씨구'같은 경우라고나 할까요. 이 노래가 생각나네요. 어렸을 때 불렀던 '신데렐라는 어려서 부모님을 잃고요...'하는 노래요. 거기서도 후렴구에 '샤바 샤바 하이 샤바 얼마나 울었을까요'하는 대목이 나오지요. 그냥 발음하는 재미로 넣는 여흥구라고 생각해주세요. 뜻에 신경쓰지 말고 각각 단어가 주는 발음의 맛을 즐기는 게 좋을 것 같습니다. 특히 이 노래의 후렴구는 비슷한 발음이 변이를 보이는 현상이 발견되지요. keemo가 kymo가 되고 바로 daro가 dime이 되고요. subble이 bubble로 변하고 뒤이어서는 구 자체가 변이를 보이는데, Periwinkle soap fat이 pennywinkle nip cat으로 변하는 과정을 보세요. 끝부분의 발음이 똑같이 운을 맞춰주고 있죠. 특히 [p]사운드와 [t]사운드의 끊어 읽는 듯한 발음이 독특한 맛을 느끼게 합니다. 우리말로 하면 끝말잇기와 비슷한 재미를 준다고나 할까요?

* 아까 말씀드렸듯이 이 노래 역시 해석이 불가능한 후렴구가 붙습니다. 옷을 까다롭게 고르는 제니의 성격을 반영하는 거지요. 평범한 말과 색깔로는 표현되지 않는 복잡하고 긴 이름의 옷을 입겠다는 것을 표현하는 것뿐 역시 특별한 의미는 없습니다. 여기서도 대부분의 후렴구들이 그러하듯 그냥 비슷한 발음이 변이를 보이면서 혀를 굴리는 재미를 줍니다. fol-de-rol-dy til-de-tol-dy하는 부분은 [f]사운드와 [l],[r]사운드 등에 신경 써서 발음하다보면 혀가 막 꼬이고 마비가 오는 후유증도 옵니다. 조심하세요.^^

*그림책 중에 "What will you wear, Jenny Jenkins?"가 있더군요. 이 노래를 테마로 해서 만든 그림책인데 주인공은 테디베어구요. 각 장마다 색깔이 바뀌면서 노래 가사대로 질문을 하는 거예요. '하얀색 옷을 입을래?' 하면서요. 그럼 주인공 곰이 싫은 이유를 대는 거예요. 이 노래를 아는 아이들이라면 재밌게 읽을 수 있고, 또 그림책으로 보면 확실한 시각적 효과가 있으니까 좋을 것 같은데, 또 노래 테이프도 들어있다던데.... 우리나라에서 파는 지는 잘 모르겠네요. 아마존에서 파는 것만 봤거든요. ^^; 혹시 이 책 본 일이 있는 분, 가르쳐 주세요.

Once there was a king. His daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was the most beautiful of all.
Near the king's castle there was a dark forest, and in the forest under a tree there was a spring. On warm days the youngest princess always came here and sat by the cool water. Sometimes she took a golden ball. She threw it in the air and caught it again, and that was her pleasure.
One day, while she was playing with her golden ball, it did not fall back into her little hands. It fell into the spring. The princess began cry.
Just then a frog came out of the water and said, " Princess, why are you crying?" "I'm crying because my golden ball has fallen into the spring," she answered. "Don't cry any more," said the frog. "I can help you. But what will you give me, if I get back your toy for you?"
"I will give you anything you like, dear frog." she said," my clothes, my jewels, or anything you like." "I don't want any of them," answered the frog. "I want to live with you; I want to eat from your little gold plate and sleep on your bed."
She wanted her ball so much that she did not think much and said to the frog. "Very well, I'll promise anything you like, if you only bring back my ball." The frog jumped into the water and soon he came back with the ball. He threw it on the ground.
The princess was very glad to see her pretty toy again. She picked it up and ran away. "Stop, princess!" cried the frog. "Take me with you. I cannot run so fast." But the princess did not hear the frog speaking. She ran home and soon forgot all about the poor frog.
The next day, when the princess was sitting at table with the king, she heard strange footsteps and someone knocked at the door and said, "Youngest princess, let me come in!" She ran to the door to see who was there. But when she opened it, she saw the frog there. She was very much afraid and shut the door at once.
The King saw this and said: "Child, why are you afraid? Is there a giant at the door?" "Oh, no," she answered, "it isn't a giant, it's an ugly frog."
"What does the frog want with you?" "Oh, dear father, yesterday I was playing by the spring. My golden ball fell into the water.
Because I was crying, the frog jumped into the water and brought it back for me. I promised him that I would be his friend. But at that time I didn't think he could come here. Now he is outside the door, and wants to come in here."
At that time there was another knock at the door, and a voice said: "Open the door, my youngest princess! Have you forgotten the promise you made, by the spring under the tree's shade? Open the door, my youngest princess!"

The princess thought of the cold frog sleeping in her pretty clean bed and began to cry. But the king said, "You must be kind to him, for he helped you when you were in trouble" She picked the frog up with her two fingers, carried him upstairs to her room and put him in a corner. But when she was in bed, he came up to her bed and said, " I am tired and sleepy. Please take me up on your bed, or I'll tell your father."
Then the princess got very angry. She caught the frog up and threw him with all her might against the wall. When he fell to the floor, he was no longer a frog, but a handsome prince with beautiful eyes. Then he said to her, "I was changed into an ugly frog by a bad witch and you alone could help me to get out of the spring."
Soon the prince married the princess and took her to his own country. They lived happily together.
