How Has Internet Worked?

Internet is the largest computer network in the world started from ARPANET. Capitalized proper noun Internet is different from common noun internet. Common noun internet is an abbreviation of internetwork that connects multiple communication networks. On the other hand, Internet has developed from the local networks of LAN (Local Area Networks) into a huge global communication network comprising almost all minor local networks in the world.

Internet services include such various services as email, connection with remote computer by telnet (telecommunication network), file transmission by FTP (File Transfer Protocol), news services by Usenet News, information research services by Gopher, online chatting and discussion by IRC (Internet Relay Chat), electronic announcement board by BBS (Bulletin Board System), hypertext information services by WWW(World Wide Web), and online games. Real time Internet broadcasting system that broadcasts live images and voice data on real time base, and video conference and meeting system have been developed recently. Due to these various information services and abundant information resources, Internet is the provider of a sea of information.

Internet was originated from the ARPANET that was set up to connect four universities in the U.S.A. by the support of Defense Ministry in 1969. In the beginning, it was installed for the military purpose but since it adopted TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), ARPANET for public use and MILNET (Military Network) for military use were separated, providing a basis for current Internet environment.

In 1987, NSFNET (Networks of National Science Foundation ¹Ì±¹ ±¹¸³°úÇÐÀç´Ü) began to work as the backbone network of Internet by taking over the role of ARPANET and in 1992 CIX(Commercial Internet Exchange) was established by commercial internet businessmen, enabling the Internet for commercial and public use worldwide.
In Korea, the KRNIC (Korea Network Information Center Çѱ¹ÀÎÅͳÝÁ¤º¸¼¾ÅÍ) of the National Information Society Agency (Çѱ¹Á¤º¸»çȸÁøÈï¿ø, Çѱ¹Àü»ê¿ø) is in charge of distribution and registration of IP addresses and domains.
