책장에 책이 하도 어지럽게 널려 있어서 정리 좀 하려고 이 글을 씁니다.
Intro 단계 책들은 다 만화주인공들이 나오는 장난감 같은 입체 책이었는데,
1단계 책들은 수채화 풍 또는 피카소 풍의 아름다운 그림에 한편의 시 같은 문장으로 이루어져 있습니다.
그래서 글자수가 많은 것도 아니면서 어려워요.
우리 아이가 7살인데, 7살한테 좀 어렵지 않을까 싶은 책이 몇권 있습니다.
그런건 몇년 후에 다시 보여주면 돼요.
아이가 좋아하는 책은 역시 유머 감각이 있는 책이더군요.
지난 8개월 동안 받은 책입니다. 순서는 뒤죽박죽입니다.

(****) 는 우리 아이의 반응입니다. 5개 만점.
1개는 한두번 읽고 바로 버림받은 책이고, 5개는 아이가 자꾸자꾸 읽어달라고 하고, 본문을 다 외우는 책입니다.
1. My crayons talk (***)
색깔과 크레용의 꺼칠꺼칠한 질감이 느껴지는 예쁜 책입니다.
내용이 평이해서 아이가 썩 좋아하지는 않네요.
Talk. Talk. My crayons talk.
Yacity. Clackity. Talk. Talk. Talk.
Purple shouts, "Yum! Bubble gum."
2. When this box is full. (***)
한편의 시입니다. 그래서 좀 어렵죠.
각 계절을 대표할 만한 물건들이 하나씩 나와요.
January - a snowman's scarf,
February - a red foil heart,
March - a robin's feather,
3. Water. (****)
단순 문장이 반복되어서 참 쉽습니다.
그림은 너무 예쁩니다.
Water is rain.
Water is dew.
Water is ice and snow.
Water is high in the sky.
4. Time to... (*****)
한 남자아이의 하루 일과를 선명한 사진으로 소개합니다.
재미있어요.
Seven o'clock in the morning, time to... wake up
Eight o'clock in the morning, time to... eat breakfast
Nine o'clock in the morning, time to... go to school
5. Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs (*****)
단순화로 표현한 만화같은 공룡책.
우리 아이는 공룡이 나와서 무조건 좋아합니다.
Triceratops, Spinosaurus, Kentrosaurus, Tyranosaurus rex.
A long time ago, there were dinosaurs.
There were dinosaurs with horns.
6. Fire fighters (***)
소방관이면 아이가 좋아할 만한 소재인데, 그림이 좀 컬트적이어서 아이가 안좋아합니다.
When the fire bell r-i-n-g-s,
fire fighters stop whatever they are doing.
Slide down the fire pole one after the other,
pull on heavy pants, pull on heavy boots, into the coats,
on with the hats, and up on the trucks they go.
7. Stopping by woods on a snowy evening - Robert Frost (*)
프로스트의 시입니다. 제가 읽어도 잘 이해가 안가더군요.
그림은 정말 예쁩니다.
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
8. The Earth and I (****)
자연을 사랑하는 한 아이의 모습이 예쁜 그림과 함께 있어요.
역시 그림이 예술입니다. 원색의 강렬한 대비가 있는 단순화.
The Earth and I are friends.
Sometimes we go for long walks together.
I tell her what's on my mind.
She listens to every word.
9. On Friday something funny happened. (***)
개구장이들의 일주일의 생활을 표현했는데, 의외로 아이가 별로 안좋아하네요.
3페이지 넘어가야 글씨 한줄 나옵니다.
On Saturday we went shopping.
On Sunday we went to the park.
On Monday we did the washing.
On Tuesday Uncle John came to lunch.
10. Tumble Bumble (*****)
문장이 길고, rhyme을 맞추느라 억지로 끼워맞춘 어려운 단어가 많습니다만
의외로 아이가 아주 좋아합니다.
이렇게 Rhyme이 맞는 책을 잘 외우더군요.
A tiny bug went for a walk.
He met a cat and stopped to talk.
They fell in step and strolled a while, and bumped into a crcodile.
The crocodile grinned wide with glee,
11. Animals should definitely not wear clothing. (*****)
동물이 옷을 입으면 안되는 이유. 벌써 제목부터 재미있지 않습니까?
역시 아이가 아주 좋아하는 책입니다.
이 책 이후로 아무때나 'definitely!'를 붙여서 참 웃기지도 않습니다.
because it would be disastrous for a porcupine,
because a camel might wear it in the wrong places,
because a snake would lose it,
because a mouse could get lost in it,
12. Silly Sally (*****)
역시 rhyme이 강조된 문장 덕분에 아이가 잘 외웁니다.
그림만 봐도 너무 웃겨요.
물구나무 서서 뒤로 걸어가며 노래부르는 모양.
Silly Sally went to town, walking backwards, upside down.
On the way she met a pig, a silly pig, they danced a jig.
Silly Sally went to town, dancing backwards, upside down.
On the way she met a dog, a silly dog, they palyed leapfrog.
13. Little cloud by Eric Carle (*****)
에릭칼의 다른 책들처첨 단순하면서 예쁜 책입니다.
좀 심심한 책인데 아이가 아주 좋아합니다.
The cluds drifted slowly across the sky.
Little Cloud trailed behind.
The clouds pushed upward and away.
Little Cloud pushed downward and touched the tops of the houses and trees.
14. Animals A to Z (****)
동물 이름으로 알파벳 공부하는 책인데, 문장이 아니고 단어의 나열이라 좀 시시한가봐요.
써있는 단어 말고도 그림 안에 숨은 동물이 많아요.
이것 찾아내기 놀이하면 재미있어요.

15. The crocodile and the dentist (*****)
제가 제일 좋아하는 책입니다. 너무 재미있어요.
저는 작가인 고미타로의 팬이 되었어요.
아이가 친척들 앞에서 데모용으로 많이 읽는 책입니다. (^_^)
crocodile: I really don't want to see him... but I must.
the dentist: I really don't want to see him... but I must.
crocodile: Aaugh !
the dentist: Aaugh !
crocodile: Shall I go through it ?

16. Rosie's walk (*****)
좀 유아틱한 책이죠.
역시 두장 넘어가면 단어 하나 써 있는, 글씨가 거의 없는 책입니다.
여우가 골탕먹는 그림이 아주 재미있어요.
Rosie the hen went for a walk.

17. Rain (*****)
역시 두페이지에 단어 하나씩 써있습니다.
그림도 아주 단순해서 그냥 색종이 같습니다.
날씨가 흐려지면서 색채가 변해가는 모양이 참 예뻐요.

18. Freight Train (*****)
칼데콧 수상작이라고 하죠. 그림이 예술작품입니다.
강렬한 원색 대비가 돋보이는 책이예요. 글씨는 거의 없어요.

Yellow hopper car
Green cattle car
Blue gondola car
19. This is baseball (****)
야구장을 소개하는 내용입니다.
우리 아이는 이 책으로 야구를 처음 알았어요.
This is a stadium,
and this is a baseball diamond.
This is one team, and this is the other team.
These are the fans.
20. Fresh fall leaves (*****)
가을 색깔이 묻어나는 예쁜 책입니다.
온통 낙엽이 뒹구는 그림입니다.
낙엽 쌓인 곳에서 이대로 장난치고 싶어요.
Fresh fall leaves...
Watching them fall, and collecting them.
Crunching them, and running through them.
21. Parade (*****)
퍼레이드가 지나가는 큰길의 풍경을 단순하게 표현했어요.
역시 예쁜 책입니다.
아이가 좋아하는 먹을것이 많이 나오므로 좋아합니다.
Parade today - No parking.
Buttons, balloons, and flags for sale.
Hot dogs, pretzels, ice cream, and soda to buy.
22. All I am (*****)
수채화 풍의 따뜻한 인간애가 느껴지는 책입니다.
세밀화로 표현한 아이의 해맑은 표정이 참 예뻐요.
나는 내 부모님의 자식이기도 하고, 내 친구들의 친구이기도 하고, 내 이웃의 이웃이기도 하다.
I am a child.
I am a friend.
I am a neighbor.
I am a helper.
23. Bread Bread Bread (*****)
세계 각지에서 찍은 선명한 보도사진 모음입니다.
다양한 빵을 먹고 있는 인간 군상들의 모습.
참 아이디어가 좋아요.
AFKN의 Reading Rainbow에서도 이 책을 소개하더군요.

단순하고 선명한 그림이 있는 숫자세기용 책입니다.
역시 시시하다고 아이가 안좋아하네요.
작은애가 좋아합니다.

Three crocodiles - No. no. crocodiles !
25. Don't forget the bacon ! (*****)
아이가 시장에 심부름을 가는데, 한눈팔면서 물품 목록이 점점 바뀝니다.
너무 웃겨요.
아이의 띨빵한 표정도 참 재미있어요.
우리 아이가 아주아주 좋아하는 책입니다.

피카소 풍의 풍경화입니다.
날씨마다 그림 색깔이 확 변하는게 참 아름다워요.
비오는 풍경, 눈오는 풍경 등등...
Just at the moment when night becomes day,
when the stars in the sky begin fading away,
you can hear all the birds and the animals say,
" What will the weather be like today ? "
27. We're making breakfast for mother. (*****)
역시 Rhyme이 강조되고, 같은 문장이 계속 반복되어서 외우기에 딱 좋아요.
저는 순서가 헷갈리더구만 아이는 자알 외웁니다.
We're making breakfast for mother.
We know she'll have a super day.
since we're making breakfast for mother.
We're fixing up this shiny tray.
28. The First Night. (**)
아기예수 탄생의 순간을 묘사한 좀 성스러운 분위기의 책이예요.
아기가 맞은 세상의 첫날밤을 묘사했어요.
외양간에서 동물들과 함께 누워있는 갓난 아기의 시선으로 세상을 봅니다.
In the field were two shepherds and their sheep.
As the sheep slept, a star moved across the night sky.
The star settled over a stable in the town below.
In the warm, dark stable, there was a lamb.
There was a cow, too, and piles of crisp, yellow hay.
29. Hey, little ant (*****)
문장이 아주 깁니다. 5절까지 있는 노래 가사더군요.
개미를 밟아 죽이려는 꼬마와, 살려달라는 개미의 처절한 대화입니다.
그림이 얼마나 웃기는지 저는 뒤집어졌어요.
악보도 있거든요. 노래로 부르면 금방 외워져요.
KID: Hey, little ant down in the crack,
Can you hear me? can you talk back?
See my shoe, can you see that? Well, now I'm gonna squish you flat!
ANT: Please, oh please, do not squish me,
Change your mind and let me be,
I'm on my way with a crumb of pie,

30. A special kind of love (****)
무뚝뚝한 아빠가 아들을 위해 상자로 장난감을 만들어주면서, 대화하는 법을 깨달아 간다는
좀 난해하면서 따뜻한 이야기입니다.
역시 그림이 수채화 풍이고 글씨는 적은 편입니다.
There once was a man who had a son.
The son loved the man, and th man loved boxes.
Big boxes. Round boxes. Small boxes.
The man loved his son, too.
but he had trouble telling him.
31. Each Peach Pear Plum (****)
풍자적인 그림의 숨은그림찾기 책입니다.
유명한 명작동화 주인공은 다 나옵니다.
주인공이 어디 숨었나 찾아보는 것이 재미있습니다.
