역시 예리하십니다. 영어 공부에 관심있는 분들이 오시는 곳이라 그런지 관사 하나 하나를 꼼꼼하게 챙기시네요. 글쎄요.. 제가 참고한 책에는 the로 쓰여있을 확률이 높습니다(지금 가지고 있지 않아서 직접 확인은 못하겠지만).
다만, 제가 거기에 신경쓰지 않아서 승호에게 이야기할 때 실제로 flush the toilet 이라고 했는지 flush a toilet이라고 했는지 기억 나지 않는군요. 하지만 곰곰 생각해보니 정관사가 들어가야 할 것 같습니다. 지적해 주셔서 감사합니다. 뒤늦게 9월 27일에 본문 내용도 수정했습니다.
캬! 학창 시절 저를 울렸던 관사가 저를 또 한 번 울리는군요(이과 출신으로 법칙을 중요시 여기던 저에게 무법칙이 법칙인 것처럼 보이는 관사가 공부하기 가장 힘들었던 부분이었습니다).
제가 영어공부를 하면서 주로 방문하는 사이트 www.dailyenglish.com의 한글 게시판에서 혹시나 도움이 될까하고 퍼놓았던 '관사'에 대한 글을 올립니다. 관사를 더 잘 활용하고 싶으신 분들은 한번 읽어 보세요. 글이 무척 기니까 관심 있으신 분만 읽으세요.

갸우뚱 갸우뚱, 관사, 정관사가 문제집 몇개 풀어본다거나 문법책 달달 외운다고 해결되는게 아닙니다. 원어민이 아닌 외국인들 입장에서 영어를 익힐때, 한국인뿐 아니라 세계 여러 나라 사람들이 가장 해결하지 못하는 분야가 바로 '관사' '정관사' 부분입니다. 심지어 원어민들 조차 관사, 정관사의 원리에 대해서 설명을 못합니다. 원어민 영어관련 교수들 역시 그 부분에 대한 설명에는 난색을 표합니다.
왜 그런가? 말이란게 우주에 편만한 과학적인 법칙에 따라 이루어지기 보다는, 어리석은 인간들의 무의식적인 습관에 의해 형성 발전된 것이기 때문입니다. 한마디로 다수의 원어민들이 사용하면 그것이 정답이 되는 참으로 야속한 현실인 것입니다.
그러니 이건 왜 이래요? 저건 왜 저래요? 하고 단어 하나마다 시비걸고 후벼 팔것이 아니라 문장, 글 속에서 그것의 기능을 익혀야 합니다.
관사, 정관사를 때려잡고 싶으시면, 일단 집에 있는 유서깊은 **영어책 맨**영어 ..뭐든 문법관련책 찾아서 일단 내용을 쭈욱 훑어서 대강의 상식을 일견 합니다. 외우려고 애쓰지도
마십시오. 그냥 몇가지 법칙이 있나봐..하고 지나갑니다.
그다음에, 이것이 외국 대학이나 언어연수 과정에서 외국인들이 한국학생을 비롯한 세계여러나라의 학생들 에게 실시하는 보편적인 방법입니다.
아주 쉬운 책을 한권 정한다거나, 아니면, 아주쉬운 영문 신문 기사 한가지를 정합니다. 그리고 내용을 샅샅이 파악을 합니다. 그다음에 초미의 관심이 되는 관사나 정관사가 어디에 들어 붙어있는지 형광펜으로 샅샅이 파악을 합니다. 그리고 그 기사를 거의 암기할 정도로 충분히 읽고, 내용파악하고 지나갑니다.
이런 식의 --컨텍스트 안에서 문법적인 요소 짚어나가기를 하루, 이틀, 사흘, 나흘 닷새,엿새, 이레, 여드레, 아흐레 진행시킵니다. 관사, 정관사가 들러붙는 곳만 형광펜으로 표시를 하세요. 그리고 이따금 문법책의 정관사 부분을 아주 심심해 미치겠을때 들쳐보고 참고하세요. 그러면 좀 상태가 나아질겁니다.
참고로, 아무리 영어가 능통한 사람이라도, 외국인이 가장 안되는 부분이 바로 관사,정관사 라고 합니다. 희망을 가지시길.

== 관사 마스터 비공 ==
일정 기간(하루,일주일, 혹은 한달)을 정해놓고 그 기간동안 읽고 듣는 모든 영어 입력에서 명사가 나오면 그 쓰임을 주시합니다. 즉, 여기에 어느 종류의 관사가 사용되었는가 보는 것이지요. 정관사인가, 부정관사인가, 무관사인가. 단수인가, 복수인가, 불가산명사인가. 왜 "이 상황에서" 이 용법(관사)을 사용했을까를 생각해 보고, 왜 다른 용법을 사용하지 않았을까를 생각해 봅니다. 그리고, 다른 용법을 사용한다면 뜻이 어떻게 바뀔지를 생각해 봅니다. 대략 한시간만 이 훈련을 해보면 감이 잡힐 겁니다.
꼭 서른 몇가지의 규칙을 외워야만 하는 것은 아닙니다. 이런 훈련을 거치면 자신의 언어장치가 자동으로 그런 규칙을 추론하여 만들어 내고, 그 규칙은 무의식에서 작동하게 됩니다.
ps. 단, 주의할 점은 '올바른 영어'로 된 글로 훈련을 해야 합니다.

정관사와 무관사 (Definite & Zero Article)
영어에는 동일한 단어이면서 가산명사로 혹은 불가산 명사로 쓰이는 것들이 있다.
가산명사(단수)로 쓰인 경우에는 몇몇 특별한 예외를 제외하곤 a나 the의 "관사"가 와야하고, 불가산일 경우는 the가 오거나 혹은 "무관사" (관사가 아예 오지 않음)가 가능하다. 다음의 보기를 주의깊게 관찰하고 스스로 나름의 패턴을 찾아서, 이하의 연습문제들을 풀어보기 바란다. 정답은 맨끝에 제공된다.

어떤 경우에 정관사를 쓰고 어떤 경우에 무관사를 쓰는지 감이 오는지? 주변에 좀 쉽다 싶은 글을 아무거나 하나 빼어들고 정관사가 있는것, 없는 것을 집중적으로 살펴보고, 문맥을 파악하고, 그 차이를 "느껴"보도록.

꼭 형식화된 규칙이나 공식을 만들어야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 모르면 모르는대로 그냥 '실제 글'을 여러번 읽어 보고 그 느낌을 잡으려고 하세요. 언젠가는 체득됩니다. 그리고 이게 규칙 위주의 학습보다 더 낫다고 생각합니다.(규칙에 대한 교육이 아예 필요없다는 말은 아닙니다)
8번은 the가 쓰이는 것이 적당합니다. 대충 감을 잡으셨겠지만, "구체적인 대상"일 경우 the를 사용하고, "일반적인 대상"에는 무관사를 씁니다. 산업이라는 것은 인간을 돕기 는 커녕 황폐화하는 것이다라는 진술에서는 the를 쓰지 않지만, 인터넷 산업은 요즘 각광 받는 분야다라는 표현에서는 the를 사용합니다. 8번에서는 "어떤 어떤 분야의 food industry"라고 구체적이고 특정한 대상을 지칭하기에 the를 썼습니다. 물론 어느 한쪽으로 분명히 판가름이 나기 어렵고 어중간한 경우도 있습니다. 이때는 화자의 의도와 맥락을 따라야 하겠죠.
이런식으로 실 데이타를 접한 다음 규칙들을 스윽 훑어보면 훨씬 가깝게 다가올 겁니다. 마이클 스완의 Practical English Usage를 참고용 책으로 권합니다. 물론 이런 책에서 찾아본 다음에도 실제 글을 계속 읽어나가면서 확인을 해야죠. 이런 교육법을 conscious raising이라고 합니다.
한때 이런 authentic text를 기본으로 해서 코퍼스 분석을 하고 constructivism이니 conscious raising이니 하는 이론에 바탕한 교재를 써볼 생각을 했었는데... 아마 조만간 우리나라에도 이런 스타일의 교재들이 많이 나오게 될 겁니다.
