2007년 겨울, 미스터 라지는 메사츄세츠에서 시작하여 밴쿠버에 이르기까지 3주이상의 인터뷰 프로젝트를 마쳤다. 도로를 달리며 바라보는 자연의 경치 그리고 낮과 밤이 나름대로의 생각을 실어다주기에, 동반하지 못한 나로서 가장 큰 아쉬움으로 남게 되었다.
워싱턴주 야키마시 (Yakima, Washington)에서 인터뷰한 교사이자 시인인 Jim Bodeen을 소개해본다. 시를 교실 현장 수업에 접목하신 분이라한다. 또한 집 앞마당 가든에 시를 걸어둘 수있는 기둥 (Poetry Pole)을 심어놓으셨다한다. 이웃이든 지나가는 사람이든 마음의 목소리를 담은 시 한편, 그 한편 한편의 시를 편집하여 Weathered Pages란 시집을 펴내기도 하셨단다.
나 역시 2년 전부터 시를 접목한 수업을 실시하고 있지만, 외국어로써 접하기에 학동들에게 압박감이 주워지리라 믿는다. 시 한편을 끙끙대며 마친 학동들의 붉그스런 얼굴에서 예술을 느낀다고하면 궁시렁 소리라 뭐라 꾸짖으실랑가? 나도 교실에 Essay Pole을 심어두겠다고 제안서를 내었으나 어떻게 심어야하나 고민중이다.
평범한 나에게 예술이란 추상이며 어려움이라 일컬어지지만, 일상 생활에서의 대화라 여겨본다면 다가가기가 쉽지 않을까한다. 시를 읽으면서 그림을 감상하면서 눈과 귀의 열리는 정도가 깊어지고 넓어진다고 할까보다.

Jim Bodeen is a literature and writing teacher of Latino students at Davis High School in Yakima, Washington, the publisher and editor of Blue Begonia Press, and the author of several books of poetry.
English teacher Jim Bodeen planted a poetry pole in his garden years ago to give voice to passing poets. Just as the garden by his Yakima home has become a place where lives intersect “along the path of the mailman and the butterflies,” so, too, his publishing books of poetry and essays by young Latinos has allowed those field workers’ and students’ lives to intersect with more people.
Jim began by telling about the poetry pole.
“Planted in an out-of-the-way place, the poetry pole is a source of truth. Poems here are written directly to the muse without editors intervening,” said Jim. “Poetry poles are places to share spiritual insights, longings, and truth.”
