Parade of Nations
°¢±¹ÀÇ ÇàÁø
In the Olympic Games, countries sometimes enter according to the order of the host nation's alphabet. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics for instance, nations entered in the alphabetical order of Hangeul ¤¡, ¤¤, ¤§, etc. At the Beijing Olympics, the order was determined by the number of strokes in a nation's name in Chinese characters. However, in all Olympic Games, Greece, where the Games originated, enters first, while the host country always enters last.

Torch
¼ºÈ
The torch is lit by sunlight in Greece, where the ancient Olympic Games were held. The torch is relayed to the host country and remains aflame at the main stadium. The torch first appeared in modern Olympics at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, and the torch relay began in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. For the Beijing Olympics this year, the torch traveled 137,000 km over 130 days and was carried by around 21,880 people. There were protests calling for the independence of Tibet in many parts of the world, which led to some difficulties with the torch relay.

Medals
¸Þ´Þ
At the ancient Olympics, the winners received laurel crowns. At the first modern Olympics, the first-place winners received silver medals. It was in 1904 that gold, silver and bronze medals were given out. The gold medal is made of pure silver coated with gold, while the silver medal is made of pure silver, and the bronze medal is made of bronze. From the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Nike, the goddess of victory, was engraved on the front side of the medals. From the 1972 Munich Olympics, the host nation would put a special design on the back side. At the Beijing Olympics, jade, a favorite gemstone of the Chinese, is used.
