미국학교에서 에세이 쓰기는 어떻게 가르치는가에 대한 답변
지난번 미국에서 시쓰기의 예를 올린 후 미국에서 에세이 쓰기를 어떻게 배우는 지 궁금해 하는 분들이 있어서 그에대한 글을 올립니다.
중학교 6학년인 딸에게 미국 학교에서 에세이 쓰기를 어떻게 가르치는지물어 보았습니다. 딸아이의 대답은 이러하였습니다. (미국에서는 6학년은 중학생에 해당됩니다.)
“The teachers tell the students the guidelines of writing an essay. They show the students how an essay is supposed to look. The students pick an idea and write an essay on it.The teachers guide the students through the process. They show the students to edit the essay. The students meet with other students and discuss the essays and help each other. This takes couple of weeks. And everybody has finished essay. “
그럼 어떤 가이드라인이 주어지는냐는 저의 질문에,
“The guidelines are what are supposed to be in the essay. For example, an essay has a main idea and three supporting ideas. The essay is five paragraphs, and so on.”
그리고 이말을 덧붙였습니다.
“The students write the essays only in class so the teachers can look at them and tell the students right away after they made mistakes. The teachers discussed the essays with the students. And then the students go home, type them up. The teachers really help the students.”
참고로 저의 경우는 출판사 REA에서 ESL(English as a Second Language)용으로 펴낸 “Writing Intermediate & Advanced”을 보았는데 내용이아주 좋아서 영어로 에세이 쓰기 연습하는데 도움이 많이 되었습니다. 물론 이 책은 어린이보다는 어른을 위해서 만들어진 책입니다만. 제 딸의 말을 들어보니 이 책에있는 내용이 저희 딸애가 학교에서 배운 그 가이드라인을 그대로 따라 가는 것 같습니다.

우리나라도 이렇게 글을 쓰면 선생님이 다 comment를 달아준다면 얼마나 좋을까 생각합니다.
함께 고치고 써 가는 과정에서 다른 사람의 생각도 들어보고 많이 느낄 수 있을 텐데...
가끔은 그런 환경의 다른 나라 부러울 때도 있답니다. ^^
