Color TV in Korea
The beginning of color TV age in Korea goes back to the 1970s. Korea first began producing color TV sets in 1974. But still, Koreans then had to watch TV programs in black and white for some time. It was because the government thought that color TV sets make people spend much money. Color TV sets were also quite expensive in those days.
By the late 1970s, Korea became one of the main exporters of color TV sets. However, other countries were upset because Korea was selling color TV sets to other countries while not letting Koreans buy their own color TV sets.
Finally, the government allowed selling color TV sets in Korean market on Aug. 1, 1980. On Dec. 1, 1980, color TV broadcast began.
So, with TV broadcast in color, many things changed. Broadcast time increased. Also, dramas, sports and entertainment programs increased. Many things shown on TV in beautiful colors made people buy more products.
Today, many people use the Internet, mobile phones for entertainment and getting information. But still, TV is important for many Koreans with Korea being one of the leading TV makers in the world.
