Tympanitis
(otitis media)
Otitis is an infection of the ear that mostly affects children. The region that is usually affected is the tympanum; such an infection is called tympanitis.Tympanitis is probably the childhood disease that causes the greatest number of visits to the doctor for children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years. Many factors promote the occurrence of otitis in babies and young children. Firstly, they are more sensitive to respiratory infections. Secondly, the duct that links the middle ear to the throat (Eustachian tube) is shorter than that of adults. It is thus easier for microbes to enter the middle ear. Finally, children often drink in a lying down position, which favours the occurrence of otitis.
