1. Motion and Forces
1) When something is in motion, it is moving.
2) What makes an object move is a force. Any pull or push is a force.
3) A force can change an object¡¯s speed, direction and position.
4) Friction is a contact force that makes moving objects slow down or stop moving.
5) Gravity is a force that pulls things down to the ground.
2. Magnetism
1) Magnetism is a force that acts on magnetic materials near a magnet.
2) A magnet has two poles: the north pole ( N pole) and the south pole ( S pole).
3) Different poles pull, or attract, each other.
4) The same poles repel each other or push each other away.
3. Energy
1) Energy is the ability to do work or to cause change.
2) Heat, light, sound, electricity and wind are some forms of energy.
3) People change energy into more useful forms, such as electricity.
4) The main source of energy on Earth is the Sun.
5) People get energy from food.
4. Heat
1) Sunlight is the main source of heat.
2) Heat comes from some kinds of fuels like wood, coal, natural gas and oil.
3) Whenever energy moves, heat is given off.
4) Conduction, convection and radiation are three ways that heat moves.
5. Electricity
1) All matter is made of particles that have electric charges.
2) An electric charge is a tiny amount of energy.
3) Electric current is the movement of electric charge from one place to another.
4) The path that a controlled electric current flows through is an electric circuit.
6. Sound
1) Sound is made when things vibrate.
2) A sound¡¯s loudness is how loud or low it is.
3) A sound¡¯s pitch is how high or low it is.
4) Sound travels through solids, liquids and gases.
7. Light
1) The Sun is the main source of light.
2) Light also comes from stars, fires, candles and electricity.
3) Light gives off heat and travels in straight lines.
4) Light reflects when it bounces off something like a mirror.
5) Sometimes, refraction causes light to bend or separate into its many colors.
