In our society, we have observed that people in every corner are talking about English, including me. We are eager enough to debate and learn something from other people's point of views. This makes English as one of the most intriguing issue, especially on this website.
We can see several remarkable screen names here.

These screen names have recommended some good English books and given helpful advices in teaching English without being paid at all (maybe).
In fact, the experiences that they have shared in educating their children are awfully helpful for those people who just become parents.
Anyways, the purpose of this writing is to discuss the following subject matters:
1) Many of us seem to be experts on English, however, in reality they do
not apply it as part of their communication.
2) Some of us usually underestimated the English skills of the non-native
speakers from India or the Philippines.
3) We can never be like the native speakers.

Since our society pays an overwhelming attention to English, many of us have been studying English for a long time and spending too much money on this. I don't have the right to generalize, but we must admit that until now most of us
are still very low. That's because we are too much interested in something 'about English', not 'in English', I think.
Outwardly, we all seem to be knowledgeable on English.
Let's say for example:
What are the rules of Phonics?
What are the good methods in teaching them for kids?
What English grammar book is better for EFL learners?
What is the best way in learning it?
What is the next level in English reading?
What is a better choice, intensive or extensive reading?
We have learned something from these questions since members of this site have been putting their different perspectives. I am also grateful for all those ideas and information.
I want to share an interesting story about one of my active students.
He is in grade four now.
One day, as soon as he came in, he said,
"Teacher, I am sad because I street 앞으로 꽈당, so my leg is very very 아파요.
Or when he was asked "How are you?",
He said, "First, I am so-so. Second, I am good."
As we know, his answer is rather strange from the view of normal English expression. But I think it was a unique answer. He analyzed his feeling and separated it into so-so feeling and good feeling.
He answered unconsciously, like in Korean.
He doesn't hesitate to say anything in his own English way though his English words are mixed up with Korean.
When he plays with his friends, he often combines English & Korean words.
Of course, English teachers must not use this kind of English.
What I am trying to point out is that we should be confident enough in applying English into practice by merely using it comfortably. What we really need is the boy's Konglish, not saying something and knowledge about English.
But my point is that, why do we seem to laugh easily at Konglish mixed up with 70% of English and 30% of Korean, sometimes 50:50?
Albeit, we are certainly aware that we are using 100% Korean in discussing something about English. Isn't it ironic?
We just constantly argue and discuss a lot of things about how to improve our English skills, but we aren't putting it into practice. We have anxieties in using it as part of our communication such as in speaking and writing. Why is this so?
Are we afraid to be judged and laughed at by others? This is one of the reasons why I encouraged each one of you to write your comments in English. People who set an impossible goal such as being like an English native speaker ignore anyone else who says practical results-Konglish, and make him/her a joke of comedy shows.

My second topic deals with the non-native speakers' English from India or the Philippines. Frequently, we would like to take their English as a joke of some comedy shows. But we don't know on the other side that we are also the main actors of these comedy shows. Why? That's because we don't converse in English at all even though we love to say something about English.
It is such a sad comedy!
Let's look at first the real situation of our English skills before giving any judgments to the other non-native speakers' English skills.

Above all, we cannot be like the native speakers unless we either were born there or have lived there for a long time. Well, it is possible to copy their accent and pronunciation, but the fact is that, English is not our mother tongue. The result is that we only end up into fantasizing things. If we planned to be like them from the beginning of studying English, it would still be impossible in common circumstances in Korea even though we would wait until the East Sea is dry and M.t Baekdu is worn away.

I have waited for a week, and I really appreciate the two English comments in spite of my inordinate, irrational, and even sardonic writing.
One of the comments gave me some proper insights.
I want to say 'Thank you' to her again. (She seems to be a professor.)
Why have we seen only the two English comments for a week in spite of my asking? I know that there are many prominent people on this site who have great knowledge in English. So far they have written many supporting and opposite comments here. I thought at first that my writings were so controversial that I must have been at a loss if anyone would be brave enough to brought up a different opinion. But I am disappointed to know that only two persons made their English comments about this topic. I still feel something wanting because I am still eager to know your different English perspectives.
Probably, some of you might be thinking that this opinion of mine may give ***** and incisive ideas to the readers.
On the other hand, it may give an impression of a bit childish and even sound so annoying to others. So, I just hope for your open-mindedness in understanding my humble opinion.

여기 쑥쑥에는 몇 가지 눈에 띄는 ID들이 있습니다.

이런 아이디들은 몇 가지 좋은 책들을 소개하고,
영어를 가르치는데 있어 좋은 조언을 해 주고 있습니다.
그러나 아무런 보수도 받지 않습니다.(아마도)
특히, 자녀 교육에 관한 경험담은
이제 막 부모가 된 사람들에게 정말 큰 도움이 됩니다.
어쨌든, 이 글의 목적은 아래 주제에 대해 토론해 보는 것입니다.
1) 우리 중 많은 사람들이 영어에 관한 전문가처럼 보인다.
하지만, 실제로는 영어를 의사소통의 수단으로 사용하지 못한다.
2) 우리들 중 일부는 흔히 인도나 필리핀에서 온 비원어민 영어화자의 영어를 저평가한다.
3) 우리는 영어 원어민처럼 결코 될 수가 없다.

우리 사회가 영어에 과도한 관심을 보이기 때문에,
우리들 중 많은 사람들이 영어를 오래 동안 공부하고 돈도 많이 쓰고 있다.
저는 모든 것을 일반화할 수 있는 권리는 없습니다,
하지만 대부분의 우리는 여전히
아주 낮은 수준에 불과하다는 것을 인정해야 합니다.
이유는 다름 아닌 우리가 ‘영어에 관한’ 무엇인가에
너무 많은 관심을 가지기 때문입니다, ‘영어로 말하는’ 무엇이 아니라.
겉보기에, 우리 모두는 영어에 관해 잘 알고 있는 것 같습니다.
예를 들어 보면,
파닉스 규칙은 무엇이고,
그리고 어떻게 가르쳐야 좋은 방법인가?
문법책은 무엇이 좋은지
그리고 어떻게 배워야 최상인가?
읽기책은 다음 단계가 무엇인가?
듣기는 흘려듣기 집중듣기에서 어느 것이 효과적인가?
우리는 이런 질문들에서 무엇인가를 배웁니다,
왜냐하면 여기 쑥쑥의 회원님들이 그들의 다른 생각들을 올려 주고 있기 때문입니다.
저 역시 이런 생각과 정보에 대해 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.
제가 가르치는 아이 중에 개구쟁이 남자 아이에 관해 말하고 싶습니다.
남자 아이인데, 지금 4학년입니다.
어느 날 학원에 들어오자 말자,
"Teacher, I am sad because I street 앞으로 꽈당, so my leg is very very 아파요.
또는 "How are you?"라고 하면,
"First, I am so-so. Second, I am good."
아시다시피, 아이의 대답은 정상적인 영어에서 보면 다소 이상합니다.
하지만 저는 특이한 대답이었다고 생각합니다.
그 아이는 자기 감정을 분석하여 그저 그런 기분과 좋은 기분으로 구분하였습니다.
마치 한국말처럼 무의식적으로 대답했습니다.
비록 이 아이의 영어는 한국말과 짬뽕이지만,
조금의 주저함도 없이, 자기 자신만의 방식으로 말합니다.
친구들과 장난을 칠 때면, 자주 영어와 한국어 연결합니다.
물론, 영어교사는 이런 영어를 사용해서는 안 됩니다.
제가 말하고 싶은 것은 우리는 영어를 무대포로 그냥 사용함으로써 영어가 실제 사용 가능하도록 자신감을 가져야 한다는 것입니다.
우리가 정말 필요로 하는 것은 그 아이의 콩글리쉬입니다,
영어에 관해 무엇을 말하는 것이 아니고, 영어에 관한 지식이 아닌.
하지만 제 요점은 왜 우리는 70% 영어에 30% 우리말,
대로는 50:50인 콩글리쉬를 쉽게 비웃는가 하는 것입니다.
그러나 우리는 분명 알고 있습니다.
우리는 영어에 관한 무엇을 토론할 때,
100% 한국어를 사용하고 있다는 것을.
아이러니가 아닌가요?
우리는 영어실력을 어떻게 하면 향상시킬 것인가에 관한 많은 것을
끊임없이 논쟁하고 토의합니다.
하지만 우리는 영어를 사용하지 않습니다.
우리는 의사소통의 일부로서 영어를 사용하는데 걱정 불안이 있습니다.
예를 들어 말하기와 쓰기에서처럼. 왜 이럴까요?
우리는 다른 사람이 우리를 판단하고 우리에게 썩소를 보내는 것을 두려워하나요?
제가 여러분에게 영어로 댓글을 달아 달라고 부탁드린 것도
이런 이유 중의 하나입니다.
원어민처럼 되기 같은 불가능한 목표를 설정한 사람이
실제적인 결과-콩글리쉬를 말하는 다른 사람들을 무시합니다.
그리고 그런 사람들을 코메디의 농담거리로 만듭니다.

저의 두 번째 주제는 인도나 필리핀에서 온 비원어민의 영어에 관한 것입니다.
빈번하게, 우리는 이런 사람들의 영어를 코메디의 농담으로 즐겨 인용합니다.
하지만 우리는 다른 면을 모릅니다.
우리 자신이 이런 코메디쇼의 주인공들이라는 것을. 왜?
비록 우리가 주저 없이 영어에 대해 말하기 좋아하지만
영어로 전혀 대화를 하지 않기 때문입니다.
정말로 슬픈 코메디입니다!
다른 비원어민 영어화자의 영어실력을 판단하기 전에
먼저 우리 자신의 영어 현실을 살펴봅시다.

* 3)의 총각은 사람이 만나서 이야기할 때는 입만 가지고 하지는 않는다.
손발도 표정도 사용한다고 말합니다.
* 4)번의 총각은 3가지 버전으로 말하고 있는데
첫 번째는 일반적인 필리핀 엑센트로
두 번째는 미국식 엑센트로
세 번째는 과장된 필리핀 엑센트입니다.

무엇보다도,
우리가 원어민 지역에 태어나지 않고 그런 곳에 오래 동안 살지 않는다면,
원어민처럼 될 수 없습니다.
혹시, 엑센트와 발음은 흉내낼 수 있을 것입니다.
그러나 현실적으로 영어는 우리 모국어가 아닙니다.
결과적으로 우리는 단지 환상을 쫒고 있는 것입니다.
영어공부의 시작부터 원어민처럼 되기로 정한다면,
우리의 일반적인 환경 속에는 불가능하다고 생각합니다.
비록 우리가 동해물과 백두산이 마르고 닳을 때까지 기다려도 불가능합니다.

그리고 제 글이 이상하고, 합리성이 부족하고,
심지어 냉소적이기까지 한 글임에도 불구하고
두 개의 영어 댓글에 대해서는 감사들입니다.
두 개의 댓글 중 하나는 저에게 적절한 안목을 주었습니다.
저는 그분에게 다시 한 번 감사드리고 싶습니다(대학 교수님인 듯합니다)
왜 저의 부탁에도 불구하고 일주일 동안 단 두 개의 영어 댓글만 있을까요?
여기 쑥쑥에는 영어에 관한 대단한 지식을 가진
쟁쟁한 분들이 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다.
지금까지 이분들은 여기 쑥쑥에서 많은 찬성 댓글과 반대 댓글을 달았습니다.
제가 처음 생각하기로는 제 글은 너무 논쟁거리가 될 소지가 있기 때문에
누군가 과감하게 다른 의견을 제시하면 속수무책일 것이고 여겼습니다.
하지만 실망스럽게도 단지 두 분만이 영어 댓글을 달아 주셨습니다.
저는 여전히 아쉬운 점이 있습니다.
왜냐하면 다른 분들의 색 다른 영어 댓글을 보고 싶기 때문입니다.
아마도 여러분 중에서는
이런 제 생각이
재미있고 신랄한 아이디어를 줄 수 있다고 생각하실 수도 있습니다.
반면에, 다른 분들에게는
다소 유치하고 심지어 왕짜증이 나는 소리일 수도 있습니다.
