Because, if one light bulb goes out and the wire there stops conducting, the other things would still go on.
And if it was in series circuit, when you turn on the oven, the kitchen lights might suddenly dim.
A2 :
Because high resistance means that the electrons bump into the atoms more often and when they bump, heat is produced.
