The October 10 is a special day for the people of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It is also called the Double Ten Day, as there are two 10s.
It celebrates the Wuchang Uprising of October 10, 1911, which started the Xinhai Revolution. The revolution brought the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in China. It later led to the establishment of the Republic of China on January 1, 1912.
After the end of World War II in 1945 and end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the Republic of China government lost control of mainland China. The Republic of China government then moved its capital to what is now Taipei, Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party established the People¡¯s Republic of China on mainland China.
The Double Ten Day is the national celebration day in Taiwan. There are festivities, concerts and even fireworks on that day. On mainland China, it is celebrated as the anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution / Wuchang Uprising.
It is also celebrated by many Chinese communities outside Taiwan and China. For example, you can see big parades in the Chinatowns of San Francisco and Chicago every year.
