셋이 앉아서 방학동안 어떻게 집에서 재미있게 보낼 것인지를 제가 거의 일방적으로 통보를 했고, 아이들은 좋아했습니다.
아이들은 하루에 두 시간씩 영어, 수학, 일기쓰기를 합니다.
일기를 잘 쓰는 사람한테는 각각 별 한개부터 5개까지의 등급으로 점수를 주고, 20개 이상의 별을 모으는 사람에게 일주일에 일정액수의 돈을 아이들 통장에 넣어주기로 했습니다(아이들은 용돈을 모아서 은행에 저축을 하는데, 1센트, 2센트씩 붙는 이자에 상당히 재미를 붙인듯.. 그리고 자신만의 은행카드와 비밀번호를 소지하고 있다는 것에 아주 신이 나 있습니다.)
아침에 15분씩 엄마와 같이 하는 한글공부를 포함해서, 영어와 수학교재 공부에서 역시 별을 일정 수 이상 받으면, 일주일에 한 번씩 컴퓨터 게임을 40분씩 할 수 있습니다.
7월 한 달동안 하루에 두 시간씩 아는 분의 가게를 봐 주기로 해서, 그 두 시간을 아이들의 자율학습 시간으로 정했습니다.
오늘이 겨우 이틀째이지만, 아이들은 시작을 재미있게 하고 있는 듯 합니다. 아이들은 평소에 컴퓨터에 앉을 수 없기 때문에 조금 불만이었는데, 일기를 쓸 때는 컴퓨터에서 쓰도록 해 주었더니 신나서 진지하게 일기를 씁니다. 다 쓰고나면 프린트를 해서, 제가 돌아오면 볼 수 있도록 했지요.
오늘 다이어리에는 두 아이의 오늘 일기를 옮겨볼까 합니다. 고친 부분 없이 그대로 옮깁니다. 문화와 언어의 차이로 이해가 안 되실 것 같은 부분은 약간의 설명을 괄호 안에 덛붙입니다.
자랑이의 일기
Today this morning, I ate poridge(닭죽을 끓였거든요).It was very delicious.
After I ate, I read a book called A Wrinkle In Time.
Then I went outside to play with my friends. Ardi, Danny, and I played Poker and Go – Fish. It was fun playing Poker. The game rule depends on how many kinds of pairs you have. If you have eight of a kind, you have what is called a Full house. That’s all I remember.
After we played, Danny went to the library and Ardi and I played with his Yugio cards. Then I went home and watch a TV show on channel 51. The show name was Disney’s Filmore. I was watchng it while my mom was preparing lunch.when the show ended, I was still eating. I was eating spaghetti.
After I ate, I played outside more. Danny, Ahmad, Yaser, and I were playing capture the flag. Danny and I eventually won the game. Then my sister came and called me in. My mother went to work. Now I had to do MY work. The work I had to do was math and reading. I am writing this right now.

Today, I awoke to the sound of John’s Dinkie Dinoa(조그만 디지탈 애완동물 기르는 장난감-1불 주고 Dollar Giant에서 샀습니다.), at around 8:00. I had thought that I was in my room, and I was about to say, “John! Play with that somewhere else where I can’t hear it!”
But before I even opened my mouth, my eyes opened and I saw that I was in my parents’ bedroom, with John showing something on his Dinkie Dinoa to my mom.
I got out of bed, and I can’t recall what happened next, but I know that at some time or another, I went downstairs and saw John doing his Korean work.
I prabably then grabbed a book, and went upstairs. All I know is that I had an argument with my mom, did my Korean work, and cried. But not exactly in that order.
Then I remember Hyoung Min coming, and I got a phone call from Sofiya, and she said that today was free frapuccino day at Starbucks. She asked me to go with her to check and see if it really was free frapuccino day. I asked my mom, and she said yes. I went to Sofiya’s apartment, and waited for her to come out. She came out in a couple of minutes, and off we went to Starbucks! When we arrived there, she asked the lady at the counter if today was free frapuccino day. The lady said it wasn’t, and that it had already past! I felt like swearing, then and there.
But I knew swearing was a bad thing to do, so I didn’t. Then we went to Jessica’s house, and asked her to come with us to Chevron(주유소이름;편의점이 붙어있습니다.), to buy a slurpie (얼음음료수:한국에서는 슬러시라고 하나요?)each, with Jessica paying and us paying back, but guess what she said? If you guessed no, you’re right! Ding ding! We have a winner here! Well… anyways, I reminded her that she owed me $2.39, so she gave me $2.35, and asked me if it was OK to give me 4 cents later. I said, “Keep the change.” I took the $2.35, and asked Jessica if I could use her phone. She said yes, and brought me the phone.
I then called my mom and asked her if I could go over to Sofiya’s house. She said yes, but to phone her when I got there. Then, Sofiya and I went to Chevron and bought 2 slurpies. Sofiya still owes me $1.06. We went to Sofiya’s house, and talked a bit. I phoned my mom in the middle of the conversation, telling her that I had arrived at Sofiya’s house. Sofiya, while I was on the phone, suggested that we go to Viewlynn Park(동네에 있는 water park입니다). I asked my mom, and she said yes! We went to Chanmi’s house, and asked her if she could come with us. She and Nicole came with us, and we all got wet. Then we took a break, and then played follow the leader. We had fun. Then we went to my house, where we all got popsicles(아이스크림 바). I said goodbye to them, and at 1:30, my mom left, and I started my work. I helped John with his journal, and I’m doing mine. Oops! I think I’m wasting paper. Got 2 go!
