“찾았다”는 무언가를 찾기 위해 과거에 노력했다(찾았으나 못 찾았다)는 뜻도 되고 찾고자 한 물건을 발견했다(찾았다!)는 결과를 의미하기도 합니다. 하지만 영어에서는 찾고자 한 물건을 찾았는지 그 여부에 따라 사용하는 동사가 달라집니다.
* find: 발견하다 (찾아서 발견한 것, 우연히 발견한 것 모두 가능)
-The violin played by the leader of the band on board the Titanic as the world’s greatest ocean liner slipped beneath the icy waves of the north
-They found the naked, malnourished 4-year-old boy in an overheated apartment where he had been trapped for days with the decomposing body of his mother, a bag of sugar his only source of food. (The
* look for: 찾다 (찾고자 한 것을 발견하기 전까지 행하는 노력, 즉 찾기 전까지의 찾다. 그렇기 때문에 찾고자 한 것을 발견했는지 못했는지는 알 수 없습니다.)
-If investors were looking for clarity on the heated fight between Canadian fertilizer giant Agrium Inc. and Jana Partners this week, they were likely disappointed. (The Wall Street Journal)
-“If you don’t find what you are looking for you start at the beginning,” (Chicago Tribune)
위 문장을 한글로 번역해보면 왜 한국 사람들이 find와 look for을 헷갈려 할 수밖에 없는지 알 수 있습니다. “네가 찾고자 하는 것을 찾지 못하면, 처음부터 다시 시작해라.”
*search: 검색하다, 뒤지다 (뭔가 많은 것 속에서 찾고자 하는 것을 찾는 행위, 예: 정보의 홍수 속에서 원하는 정보 찾기, 동네에 있는 무수한 집들 중에 방문하려는 집 찾기, 범죄 현장에서 단서 찾기 등)
-Hundreds of armed vigilantes have taken control of a town on a major highway in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, arresting local police officers and searching homes after one of their leaders was killed. (The Guardian)
-His campaign has officially begun its search, and Romney has taken some contenders with him on the campaign trail. (
*seek: 구하다, 추구하다 (원하는 것을 구하기 위해 찾는 행위를 지칭할 때는 look for과 비슷하며 대체 가능)
-Russians have sought assets that stick around a little longer. (The Guardian)
-Those billions will be seeking food, water and other resources on a planet where, scientists say, humans are already shaping climate and the web of life. (The New York Times)
