Before Reading
Think about the following questions before and while reading.
1. Look at the title.
(1) Do you think ‘jungle garden’ sounds usual?
No, I don’t think so. / No, it does not sound usual.
(2) Imagine what a jungle garden looks like. A jungle is a thick tropical forest.
How could Granny’s garden be a jungle?
It probably means Granny’s garden looks like a jungle. If so, it must look very natural
or Granny leaves the graden untouched.
2. Look at the front cover.
(1) Who should be the woman? The woman should be Granny.
(2) Does the lady explore a jungle? Is she in the garden in her yard?
She does not explore a jungle because she is wearing a usual dress.
She does not seem to be in a garden, either,
because the pond does not seem to be in the yard. in a house.
3. Look at the back cover.
(1) How was Granny’s garden? It is overgrown.
(2) Who is Mr. Smart? He is the next door neighbour.
(3) What did I decide? I decided to lend Granny a hand.

5 | avenue | road, street, lane, court, drive 등과 함께 주소이름에 등장하는 도로. Avenue는 대체로 나무가 양 옆으로 늘어선 큰 도로를 의미한다고 하는데 대도시 큰 길을 말합니다. |

15 | she was a bit getting worried by all his hints | 할머니께서는 옆 집 남자가 자꾸 마당을 손질하라는 암시 (일종의 압력)이 신경 쓰이게 되었다. 마을 공동체에 모여있는 주거지에서 한 집만 유독 마당을 가꾸지 않으면 이웃에서 그런 압력이 옵니다. 심지어 지자체 차원에서 경고가 오기도 해요. 어떤 곳은 벌금을 물게 한다네요. ‘내 집 내가 알아서 하는데 어떠냐…. 가 안 된다는 뜻인데 저는 이게 참 마음에 들어요. 집 앞, 거리 더럽히는 사람들 다 벌 줬으면 싶은 마음입니다. ^^ |
