¡¯Dong Yi,¡¯ a popular historic drama on TV, is about the story of King Sukjong. Do you know about Changdeok-gung, the palace where he lived? Here is the story.
Changdeok-gung was built in 1405 by King Taejong, the third king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910). It was built as a secondary palace.
King Sukjong spent most of his life at the palace. He became the king in 1674. The ceremony took place at Injeongmun (the gate of Injeongjeon).
Some of the main structures of the palace include Donhwamun, the main gate; Geomcheongyo, a stone bridge; and Injeongjeon, a hall for events.
Changdeok-gung is also famous for its very beautiful garden. It is called ¡®Biwon,¡¯ which means ¡®the Secret Garden.¡¯ It was made for the king¡¯s family.
Though many buildings were lost in fires and rebuilt again, Changdeok-gung is still one of the best preserved old palaces in Seoul.
Changdeok-gung was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
