오늘은 노동절.
그리고 매년 그렇듯이 그 다음 날이 거의 모든 학교가 시작하는 날이다.
방학 내내, 늦잠을 한껏 즐긴 기쁨이도 내일부터는 어쩔 수 없이 일찍 일어나야 한다. 다행히도 학교를 좋아하는 기쁨이. 게다가 밴드 연습이 있는 날은 한 시간을 더 일찍 가야하는데, 아침잠이 많은 기쁨이는 그 밴드조차 너무 좋아하기 때문에, 기꺼이 잠을 포기하고 일어난다.
이번 방학동안 기쁨이가 제일 많이 한 것은, '책읽기.' 평균적으로 하루에 한 두권씩은 읽었으니, 두 달 동안의 기쁨이의 독서량은 최소한 60권 이상이다. 만화책에서부터, 이전에 읽었던 책들까지 들춰내어서 읽었기도 하지만, 무엇보다도 특기할 만한 발전이라면, 좀 더 많이 생각할 수 있게 해 주는 책들을 좋아하게 되었다는 것이다.
3학년 초까지만 해도, 1,2학년 수준의 책, 또는 그림이 많은 책들을 쌓아놓고 읽기를 좋아했었는데, 머리와 가슴을 연결해 주는 깊이 있는 책들에 매력을 느끼기 시작하다가, 이번 여름에는 (모두 소설류이긴 하지만) 어린이 책을 넘어서서, 청소년들이 읽는 책의 수준까지 독서수준을 스스로 끌어 올렸다. 재미있는 책도 읽지만, '좋은 책'을 읽으면서, '엄마, 이 책은 좋은 책이예요.'라고 말하며 양서를 골라낼 줄도 알게 되었다.
방학 내내 내가 걱정했던 것은, '운동량'의 부족. 틈이 나는대로 아이와 자전거를 타러 나가거나, 하이킹을 하거나 했지만, 대부분의 시간은 앉아서 책을 읽었다.
개학이 되면, 기쁨이가 좋아하는 과목중의 하나인 체육도 시작을 하니까, 체육관에서 마음껏 몸을 움직이며 신체 에너지를 발산할 수 있기를 바란다.
얼마전에 기쁨이가 썼던 학교에 관한 글을 올린다. 기쁨이네 학교는 100년 된 역사 깊은 학교이다. 100년이 된 건물이었으니 오죽이나 삐걱 거렸겠는가.. 역사적인 건물이라서 새로 건축을 안 한다고 해서, 언제까지 아이들이 퀴퀴하고 낡은 건물에서 지내야 하나 걱정을 했었는데, 그 건물은 그대로 놔두고 박물관으로 활용을 한다고 하고, 놀이터가 있던 터에다가 새 학교 건물을 짓기로 결정을 했다. 새 건물이 하나하나 그 모양을 갖추어 갈 때마다 선생님, 학부모, 아이들이 모두들 흥분하며 새학교 이야기를 하곤 했었는데.. 얼마전에 아이들과 함께 자전거를 타고 학교에 가서 제대로 모양새가 갖추어진 것을 보고 돌아왔다. 놀이터가 좀 좁아져서 아쉽긴 하지만, 그래도 아이들이 대부분 시간을 보낼 실내가 제대로 환기가 되고, 제대로 구성이 되어 있을 것을 생각하니 기분이 좋아진다.
Why I Think My School is Cool
I think that my school, Lynn Valley Elementary School, is cool because they just put the finishing touches on it. They built a new school, in place of the old one.
The old school just celebrated its 100th birthday, this year. Half of that school will be demolished, and the other half will be used, I think, as some sort of history museum. I think that the new school is very well done.
Our school is saving up to buy us a playground. For the past year, the primary kids, including Gr. 4, have been playing on what was left of the playground, during recess and lunch break. The intermediate students had to play on a gravel field, and if we were lucky, we got to play in the grass field too. Students played Ultimate Frisbee, football, soccer, and other games. I can’t wait to see the new playground.
Our principal, Mrs. Blake, left us to teach at Larson. Our vice-principal and French teacher, Mrs. Clark, is going to teach somewhere in Coquitlam.
Lynn Valley School’s band plays very well. In Jr. Band, we played a lot of pieces, including O Canada, March for a Festival, Bluesville, Louie Louie, The Slider, Pictures at an Exhibition, Bouncin’ Baby Blues, and, Mission Impossible. I play clarinet, along with 5 other friends. Our band teacher, Mr. Bradshaw, gives us clarinets trios to learn and perform. We have performed Can Can, The Entertainer, and a lot more.
School, in my opinion, would be more exciting without homework.
