The Asian Games are officially known as Asiad. It is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Asian Games are the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
After World War II, a number of Asian countries became independent. Many of the newly independent Asian countries wanted to see a new type of sports competition and formed the Asian Games. The first Asian Games were held in New Delhi in 1951. New Delhi is the capital of India.
In its history, only nine nations have hosted the Asian Games. Thailand hosted four Asian Games in 1966, 1970, 1978 and 1998, more than other nations. All of the games were held in Bangkok.
South Korea hosted the Asian Games twice. The tenth Asian Games were held in 1986 in Seoul in 1986 and the fourteenth Asian Games were held in Busan in 2002.
Forty-four different kinds of sports were presented in Asian Games history. But the number of sports competitions will go down to just 35 at the 2014 Games.
The 2014 Asian Games will be held in Incheon, the third largest city in South Korea with a big port.
