오늘 도서관에 가서 빌려온 책 중에서, 'Going to the doctor'를 골랐습니다.
"Mister Rogers' First Experience Books"시리즈입니다. 책이 짧지만, 그대로 다 옮겨쓰면 안 될 것 같아서, 그중 하이라이트가 될만한 부분만 발췌해서 공부합시다.
이 책은 3-6세 정도의 어린이들을 위한 책입니다.
Doctors have other people who help them with their work, too...people like nurses and receptionists.
like라는 말은 'as'와 같이 많이 쓰이는 말입니다. ~와 같이, ~처럼..그런 뜻이지요..
아래 문장에서는 '대기실'이 나옵니다. 'waiting room'이지요.
They all care for many people during each day, so when you go to see the doctor, you might have to wait for your turn in a place called the waiting room.
순서를 기다린다는 뜻이 wait for the turn 입니다. might have to는 ~해야할지도 모른다는 뜻이지요. 아래에는 진찰실이 나오는데, 'examination room'이라고 합니다.
When it's your turn, you go into the examination room. The grownup who's with you can go along, too.
go along with you라고 하면, 너와 함께 간다는 뜻입니다. grownup은 어른을 말합니다.
Doctors or nurses measure and weigh children. They write down that information each time you come so they know how much you've grown.
measure and weigh는 키와 몸무게를 잰다는 뜻입니다. 미국이나 캐나다는 (다른 나라들도 있겠지만..) 가정의 제도가 있어서, 가정의(family doctor)를 지정해서 다니지요. 그래서, 어린이의 성장을 갈때마다 기록을 합니다. 다 그렇지는 않은 것 같아요.
Your doctor may ask you to lie down on a long table that has clean, white paper on it. That's the examination table.
진찰실에 가면 누울 수 있는 간이침대 같은게 있지요. 그걸 examination table이라고 합니다. 한국은 요즘에는 어떻게 하는지 잘 모르지만, 이곳에서는 긴 두루마리 종이를 풀어가면서, 한사람 깔고 누웠던 종이는 뜯어서 버리고, 새로 두루마리를 풀어서 다음 사람을 위해 준비합니다. 1회용 sheet지요.
Your doctor will probably feel your stomach, your neck and under your arms. That might tickle a little bit, but the doctor is only making sure that those parts of you are healthy.
의사가 배도 만져보고, 목과 겨드랑이도 짚어보지요. 좀 간지러울 수 있지만, 정상적인 모양을 하고 있는지 확인하는 거죠.
여기서도 might이라는 표현을 썼습니다. ~일지도 모른다는 뜻입니다. make sure는 확인하다는 뜻이구요. 제가 아침에 제 아이들에게 하는 얘기가, " Make sure you packed your lunch."입니다. 아래문장에서 otoscope라는 도구가 나오지요. 귓속이나, 입 속을 볼 때 쓰는 라이트입니다.
Your doctor may use a special flashlight called an otoscope to look in your ears, your nose, or your throat.
입의 안쪽을 주로 throat라고 하지요. 아래 문장에서는 설압자가 나옵니다. tongue depressor입니다.
Your doctor may also press down on your tongue with a wooden tongue depressor. That makes it easier to see your throat, but it might feel a little uncomfortable.
make easier이라 하면, 뭘 손쉽게 하다는 뜻입니다. feel uncomfortable은 불편하다는 말이구요. a little은 말 그대로 '조금'의 뜻으로 많이 쓰입니다. I'm a little tired. I'm a little thirsty.. 아래 문장의 stethoscope는 청진기이지요.
Your doctor may put a stethoscope on your chest to hear your heart or on your back to hear your lungs. Your doctor may also want to listen to your stomach.
lung은 폐이구요, stomach는 아시죠? 배입니다.
