Idiom | Definition |
break your heart (마음이 아프다) | If someone breaks your heart, they cause you a lot of emotional pain by ending a romantic relationship, or by deeply hurting you in some other way |
give someone a hand (누구를 돕다) | If someone gives you a hand, they help you. 이와 비슷한 idiom인 “give a big hand”하면 “박수치다”라는 의미로 많이 사용됩니다. 품앗이에서 아이들이 시연을 잘 한다거나 하면 이 말(“give a big hand)을 가끔 씁니다. |
hold your tongue (떠들지 마) | If you bite your tongue, or hold your tongue, you force yourself not to say something you really want to to say. |
jumps out of his skin (간 떨어질 뻔 하다.) | You jump out of your skin when something suddenly shocks you and your whole body jumps. |
lose my head (자제력을 잃다, 어쩔 줄 모르다) | If you lose your head, you become very angry about something. |
have a frog in my throat (목이 쉬다/잠기다.) | If you have a frog in your throat, you can't speak or you are losing your voice because you have a problem with your throat. |
lend me a hand (누구를 돕다) | If you lend someone a hand, you help them. |
It cost an arm and a leg (정말 돈이 많이 들다. 거금을 들였다.) | If something costs an arm and a leg, It is very expensive indeed |
put your foot in your mouth (말실수를 하다.) | If you put your foot in your mouth you say or do the wrong thing and usually make matters worse. |
a pain in the neck(골칫거리) | You can say someone is a pain in the neck if they annoy you, or something is a pain in the neck if you don't like doing it. 영화에 보면 가끔 나오는 말이죠. 짜증나게 만드는 물건, 일, 사람 등을 빗대어 하는 표현입니다. 그러나 informal한 말입니다. |
see eye to eye(의견이 서로 일치하다.) | If you see eye to eye with someone, you totally agree with them about something. |
pull someone’s leg(누구를 놀리다.) | If you pull someone's leg, you play a joke on them by saying something that isn't true. |
weak at the knees(기가 죽는다.) | If you go weak at the knees, you feel an emotion so strongly that it makes you feel unstable on your feet. 충격적이거나 놀랍고 멋진 것을 경험할 때 하는 말입니다. 글자 그대로, “압도 당하여 다리에 힘이 빠져 주저앉고 싶을 정도이다.” |
