We hear stories about pets who manage to find their way home, even across hundreds of miles? How do they do it?
이번주 주제는 " How do pets navigate? "입니다.
이 분야는 one of the last mysteries of science라고 할 수있습니다.
스크립트를 따라가면서 살펴볼께요~
먼저 이번주 question에 등장하는 Omar cat을 소개합니다.

The supersized cat is three years old, weighs 14kg and measures 1.2m long
Omar was the same size as all the other kittens in his litter when he was taken home by his owner Stephy Hirst in 2013.
But now the 120cm (3ft 11in) Maine Coon from Melbourne, Australia, could be the world's longest domestic cat.
After the supersized feline found internet fame to match, Ms Hirst said Guinness World Records contacted her to send in his measurements.
The current record-holder is a 118cm (3ft 10.5in) Maine Coon from Wakefield, West Yorkshire (밑에있는 사진의 고양이).

Scientists were scratching their heads a couple of years ago when a lost cat called Holly travelled 200 miles to get home. How did it do it?
There are a few theories about how cats and dogs navigate but we don't yet have the full answer.
Well, both cats and dogs have an extremely powerful sense of smell, of course. Smells are like signposts they let you know where you are. Visual landmarks also play a role, just as they do with humans.
And what about this one: magnets
Birds use it to help them navigate over thousands of miles it tells them where north is. It's thought they have some iron in their beaks.
But some scientists think mammals also have this capability.
How do cats build up the maps in their heads?

What they do when they are in a new territory is explore it in a very systematic way. So they will go out in ever-increasing circles, they'll literally construct a mental map in their heads. And so a cat that's lost its territory probably does the same thing. They'll rely on the idea that if they go out in ever-increasing circles or rectangles then eventually they'll either come across the territory or they'll come across a smell carried on the wind of the territory that they used to live in and then be able to go home.
Cats have a systematic approach which means they use a system. Which is: first they walk around their area in a small circle, then a bigger one and then a bigger one until they have a strong mental map of the place.
a mental map is a map in your head – stored in your memory. And the area cats explore – their home area - is called their territory. Cats are territorial – which means their territory is very important to them.
Having a map is great, but what happens when a cat gets lost? Dr Bradshaw says that again, it moves around in bigger and bigger circles, until it finds a clue – which is a landmark or a smell – that tells it where it is. Well, that's the theory. Though Dr Bradshaw says we really still don't have enough data – that's enough information about this.

태양의 위치
태양의 위치를 탐색에 이용하고있는 생물도 확인되고 있지만, 태양은 시간과 함께 이동하기 때문에 그 이동 오차를 계산해서 현재 위치를 이끌어 내기위한 매우 정확한 "체내 시계"의 존재도 동시에 필요하다.
실험에 의하면, 해변에있는 작은 새우와 비슷한 갑각류의 체내시계를 인공적으로 12 시간을 바꾸어준 결과 해변에서 먼곳에, 원래 돌아가야하는 해변에서 대략 180도 틀린 방향 로 이동하기
시작했다는 기록이 있다. 이 때문에 실험에 사용된 생물은 태양의 위치와 체내 시계를
이용하여 방향을 계산하고 있다고 생각된다. 또한 유럽 꿀벌 연구로 노벨 생리학 · 의학 상을 수상한 칼 폰 프리쉬 (Karl Ritter von Frisch/1886-1982)는 꿀벌이 태양의 위치를 바탕으로하고, 먹이의 위치를 둥지에있는 동료들에게 "8 자 춤"(waggle danse)를 통해 알리고있다는 것을 제시했다.
밤하늘
밤하늘을 탐색 이용하고있는 생물도 확인되고 있지만, 태양처럼, 밤하늘도 시간과 함께 이동하 기 때문에 그 이동 오차를 계산해서 현재 위치를 이끌어 내기위한 매우 정확한 "체내 시계" 의 존재도 동시에 필요하다.
Ronald Lockley의 실험을 통해 조류의 일종인 벌레는 밤하늘을 재현한 천문관에서 놓아주면 하나같이 남쪽으로 날아가는 사실이 밝혀졌다.
또한 플라 네타 륨을 천천히 회전 시키면, 새들의 비행도 그것에 연동한 것. 그는 "새가 타고난 육분의과 경선 의식을 두뇌에 가지고 있으며, 그것 매우 정확한 체내 시계를 병용하여 자신의 나아갈 길을 계산하고있다"추론하고 있다 .
지자기
지구상에는 지자기라는 자장이 있다, 하지만 지자기의 강도는 위치에 따라, 적도 부근에서는 약한 고위도 지역에서는 강해지는 특성이 있다.
비둘기는 지자기를 감지하여 귀소에 이용하고 있다고 생각하는 연구자가 있다. William Tinsley Keeton 의 실험을 통해 체내 시계를 의도적으로 없앤 비둘기가 올바른 위치에 돌아온다는 사실 밝혀 냈다.
이 때문에 그는 "비둘기는 태양의 위치와 체내 시계를 배제하고 그리고 날씨가 흐린 상황에서는 지자기를 네비케이션으로 사용하고있다"고 추론하고 있다.
그 후, 지자기를 감지할 수없이 상황에서 흐린 날에 같은 실험을실시했는데, 비둘기가 잘못된 위치에 도착함으로써위의 가설의 신빙성이 높다.
냄새
귀소에 냄새가 중요한 역할을 한다는 실험 결과도 있다.
Nozzolini, M.와 Papi, F. 두사 람의 실험에 의하면은 후각이 없는 비둘기에서는 후각이 정상적인 비둘기보다 탐색 능력이 떨어진다는 사실이 밝혀졌다.
이 때문에 두 사람은 "비둘기의 귀소는 후각과 냄새가 관련있다"고 결론 지었다.
또한 이탈리아 피사 대학의 Anna Gagliardo 씨는 후각 신경을 상실한 .비둘기 24 마리와, 지자기 정보를 뇌에 전달하는 삼차 신경을 상실한 비둘기 24 마리를 둥지에서 30 마일 떨어진 위치에서 날려 보내는 실험을 했다. 결과는 지자기 정보를 파악할 수없는 것이 24 마리 중 23 마리가 무사히 둥지에 도착한 반면, 후각 부전으로 냄새를 모르는 비둘기 중 무사히 둥지로 돌아온 것은 24 마리 중 단 한마리 라는는 것이다.
이 때문에 "비둘기가 지자기를 감지 할 수있는 것은 확실하다 해도 탐색 그것을 이용하고있는 것은 아니며, 후각을 이용하여 냄새의 지도를 머리에 그리며 비행하고있을 가능성이 높다 "는
사실을 분명히했다.
복합정보
동물이 귀소 때는 단 하나의 소스에서 현재 위치와 목적지를 계산하는 것이 아니라 다른 여러 단서를 이용하고 있다는 생각도 있다.
연어의 일생은 바다로 이르는 민물 강에서 시작된다. 알에서 부화 후 4 ~ 5 년은 바다에서 보내고, 성적으로 성숙, 산란을 위해 고향 강물에 돌아온다,
연어가 자신이 태어난 강으로 돌아올 때 먼저 지구의 지자기를 감지하여 자신의 고향의 대략적인 위치를 가늠해 실제로 강으로 다가오면 이번에는 화학적 단서를 후각을 통해 감지하여 자신의 고향을 특정했다는 설이 있다.
후각으로 감지하는 화학적 단서는 강 특유의 함유 것일지도 모르고, 연어 자신이 강에서 바다로 내리는 때 남긴 페로몬 같은 것이라고 말해지고 있다.
연어의 치어를 이용한 실험에서는 의도적으로 화학 물질을 내포하고 연어의 치어를 방사했는데, 거의 모든 치어가 성장하고 원래 위치로 돌아온다고하는 결과도 관찰되고 있다.
이러한 여러 단서를 이용하여 장거리 귀소를하고 있다고 생각되는 사례가 많이 있는 것이다.
개는 귀소 본능이 있는가 ?
동물의 귀소 본능은 다양한 능력과 단서로 구성되어 있는 것이 좋다. 개의 귀소 본능은 "믿을 수 없을 정도 떨어진 위치에서 주인의 집에 도착했다"는 일화와 전설은 전세계 산제되어 있다. 이런 말을 들으면 "개도 확실하게 귀소 본능이있다"고 믿고 싶지만
개의 귀소 본능은 아직 과학적으로 해명되지 않고있지만,개 귀소 능력에 관해서는 추측의 설이 많다,
감각 지도설
개는 시각, 청각, 후각 등에서 얻은 정보를 통해 자신을 둘러싼 지형에 대한 기억을 만드는 일종의지도 같은 것들을 머릿속에 그린다는 설.
지자기설
개는 지자기를 감지 , 지자기의 미묘한 특성과 관련하여 지형지도를 그린다는 설.
방향세포설
개는 특정 방향을 향하는 것으로 활성화 방향 세포라는 특수한 세포를 가지고있어 세포의 활동을 감지하여 현재 위치와 진행 방향을 파악하는 설
