What qualities to you need to be the man who brings joy to millions of children around the world during the festive season?

James Lovellwho

(runs a Santa school at his company Ministry of Fun in London)

A perfect 'ho ho ho!' is a key part of being a Father Christmas. It's a ho ho ho! And it needs to just reinforce the fact that you are the jolliest person on the planet. So I like to reach down into my tummy, tap it and with a big smile on my face go ho ho hoooo!

I think there would be a lot of pressure to perform. Pressure is the feeling of worry you can get when you are expected to deal with a difficult situation.

Portraying Father Christmas is not an easy job because when you're dressed as Father Christmas, you have a huge responsibility to recreate the magic of the real Santa in every way. You need to look good, you need to have lots to say and you need to be incredibly jolly and you need to have magical eyes.

What Are the Keys to Playing a Good Santa Claus at a Children's Christmas Party?

                                                                                    Eric Cook, Ho Ho Ho

The cardinal rule to remember is: children, although small, are certainly not stupid.

I think the first thing is to try remember it is not your party and certainly not the adult¡¯s party. Base your actions on what a 5 or 6 year old would expect from Santa.

Always, always, always stay in character. Don¡¯t try and sneak out for a smoke (of anything) or a drink. They will either see you or catch a wiff of whatever you tried to sneak on your breath. If you can¡¯t do with out for a couple of hours, you have a bigger problem than I can solve. Limit yourself to s and a big glass of milk.

Watch your outfit. I remember my son pointing out that Santa must be me because we were wearing the same type of wrist watch. Kids are very observant, especially when Santa makes a guest appearance. They want to remember everything, and they will remember the smallest detail.

Santa does not have to be 800 pounds. This means don¡¯t try and pack 3 pillows in your waistband so you look huge. If your arms look like tooth picks and your waist looks gigantic, kids will notice.

Don¡¯t skimp on the costume. It is far better to rent a quality outfit with a realistic beard and wig than a cheapo off the rack generic fall apart after one season suit. Again, kids will notice the gap in the back where the drawstring holds the pants together.

Parents, do not tell the children that ¡°Santa is coming¡± sometime soon. They will loose all interest in eating or any other activities. A knock on the door and Santa showing up uninvited is a rush for parents and the kids.

Santa should coordinate with the hosts about when they will show up, and who is going to be attending. It is always fun if the hosts have presents wrapped and in a bag outside for Santa to pick up with the names of the kids on the individual presents. It is also fun to put a couple of presents for maybe Grandma or Grandpa or even Mom and Dad. Nothing too extravagant, remember this is a children's party. As a back up, it is always good to put a couple of generic presents in the bag, say a couple of board games. This way if there is an extra kid or two at the party, they will get a gift too and the lack of the label can be explained away as lazy elfs or something.

If it is a family gathering and you are part of the family, try to show up and be with the family, then duck out and be Santa, then get out of costume and return to the party with as minimum fuss as possible. Also, have the photographer, there is always one in the family, take a couple of shots of you during the night to keep the illusion alive that you were there when Santa came calling.

When Santa leaves, everyone says good bye inside and Santa goes out by himself so as not to spook the reindeer. Although I never did this I just thought of something fun if the party is at a house. Tie a long string with loud reindeer bells and drape it over the house. When Santa leaves and the door closes, he could run over and jerk on the string a few times so it sounds like the reindeer are on the roof at the back of the house. Maybe one of the adults could catch a glimpse of ¡°Ol Saint Nick¡± flying away and try and point it out to the kids.

Don¡¯t make an appearance after about 9 pm. The kids need to be in bed, and parents will appreciate the help if Santa can remind everyone he won¡¯t be back until everyone is asleep.
