★가족&친지를 부를 때
아이에게 가족이나 친척을 영어로 소개 할때 어떻게 구분해서 소개해야 할지 난감해진다. 그러나 영어는 우리말처럼 가족의 호칭이 세분되지 않아 오히려 간단한 편, 큰아버지.삼촌.고모부.이모부.외삼촌은 모두 uncle로, 이모.고모.숙모.큰어머니는 모두 aunt로 부른다. 그리고 uncle,aunt.라는 말 뒤에 이름을 붙여 부른다. 예를 들어 큰어머니의 이름이 'Sumi'일경우 'Aunt Sumi'라고 한다.
동네 아저씨, 아주머니를 부를때는 uncle,aunt가 아니라 각각Mr.Kim이나 Mrs.Lee라고 부른다. 낯선 아저씨인 경우는 sir,낯선 아주머니는 ma'am이라고 정중히 불러야 한다. 아이들이 선생님을 부를때 teacher를 흔히 쓰지만 대학교수나 강사인 경우에는 teacher대신 성이 김씨면 Mr.Kim이라고 부른다.
우리나라에서는 오빠, 동생이라는 말이 있지만 미국에서는 일반적으로 그냥 이름을 부른다. 우리가 많이 알고 있는 brother, sister가 있지만 별로 쓰지 않으며 여자형제의 경우 sister 대신 sis로 부르기도 한다. 할아버지를 뜻하는 grandfather와 할머니의 grandmother는 실제(외)할아버지와(외)할머니에게만 적용된다.
