One

Alicia looked out the mist-full window. It was raining and thunder crashed into her two-story house. Lightning was crashing into the house too, except it had no noise. Alicia was in her bunk bed, along with two little brothers sleeping at the bottom. She wasn't sure if her brothers were sleeping all right, so she climbed down the ladder and checked them. Fortunately, they were sleeping quietly and peacefully. She stayed with them all night and slept there, on the bottom of the bunk bed.

When Alicia woke up, it was the crack of dawn. She realized that the crying of Phillip woke her up,

and she also realized that he was crying because he was hungry. So Alicia gave him warm milk to calm down and she fixed herself some cereal. When she went to wake her parents up, it was 6:30.

Her father got up first and groaned for waking his so early. Her mother woke up at 7:00, and thanked her for giving milk to Phillip. When Alicia said it was Monday, her father nearly dropped his toast and got dressed quickly. For Alicia, well, she didn't have to go to school ¡®till 8:30, so she got dressed slowly and watched TV with five-year-old Charles since he didn't start school ¡¯till next year. When it became

8:20, Alicia picked out a jumper she should wear and walked to school, happily skipping.

She entered the school at exactly 8:30, which was really close. She heard that a new student was coming to her class from her best friend, Polly. When first period began, our homeroom teacher, Mr. Lincoln, introduced a small boy who looked smart. Alicia noticed that his face looked kind of grubby.

¡°Everyone, let¡¯s welcome Hudson to our class!¡± Mr. Lincoln said. And he sent Hudson to the front of the class, not very far from where Alicia sat. ¡°Now, let¡¯s begin first period, which is History.¡±

When Mr. Lincoln asked questions, Hudson was the one that answered most of them. The subject was to make a toy you could play with, with any ingredients. One hour later, the first to finish was Alicia.

She had made a little row boat with sticks. Polly finished 5 minutes after Alicia. She made a Jack in the box with a small box and a spring and a doll. Many kids had finished their projects after 10 minutes.

And Hudson was the last to finish. When he showed the toy he made to the class, all of them gasped and clapped at his work. Alicia, however, stared at the toy for minutes.

Hudson had made: a dragon almost his height breathing fire, a merry-go-round which you can really ride, a scooter that can go without someone¡¯s energy, and a big windmill that pushes itself without wind. It went on and on.

When it was exam day, all the kids studied in the classroom before the exam started except Hudson. He was sitting on his chair almost dozing off on boredom let alone studying.

Alicia was sure Hudson¡¯ll get no perfect score on any test. She was watching Hudson fibbling with his fingers when Mr. Lincoln said ¡°All books off desks. Okay, you ready to spill out all the knowledge onto this exam paper?¡± He held out the papers. ¡°I¡¯ll be grading all your tests, and don't be nervous. You have to fill your mind with concentration. If you worked hard studying, I¡¯m sure your mind pays off. And don't worry even if you get bad grades, there is always a next time. So don't be hard on yourselves.¡± Mr. Lincoln said in a calming voice. Alicia glanced at Hudson again. He was feeling confidence in himself, she can tell it. The class filled concentration on their papers just as Mr. Lincoln had said.

Two

¡°I can¡¯t believe this!¡± said Alicia as she snatched Hudson¡¯s report card from his hands. Alicia, who had expected Hudson to get no perfect grades at all, was outraged by his grades. There was no. single. subject. that wasn't a perfect score! Alicia couldn't believe it! How can a kid that does not study at all have an A plus on all subjects? She stared at Hudson. He wasn't surprised at all to get such shocking grades. On the contrary, he was sitting on his chair, snoring.

Alicia stomped down the way to the teacher¡¯s desk, scowling at everyone who looked at her.

Mr. Lincoln didn't look surprised to see Alicia¡¯s fuming face. Instead, he said calmly, ¡°Having a hard time with grades, eh, Alicia? Well, Hudson¡¯s grades might be shocking to you, but, take a look at everyone.¡± Alicia frowned and looked around the classroom. All the kids were being happy about their grades, not minding Hudson¡¯s grades, good or not. ¡°Look at the happy faces, Alicia. They don't care what Hudson¡¯s grades are, or anyone else¡¯s. You have to believe in what you can do. Show yourselves.

You have to delight yourselves with your powers. Even if you get a bad grade, you have to look on the bright side. ¡° her teacher said. Alicia frowned again at his last words. Her grades were nothing to be proud of. Here were they: English, B, Math, C minus, Science, C plus, Social Studies, B minus, Art, A minus, Music, C minus, History, B minus, and P.E., D plus. Now that she thought it again in her head, the grades seemed to become worse. She shook her head as if to shake off the horrible memory and went back to her seat.

Hudson was awake when Alicia turned to his side. He was only three seats away from her, so she could see him clearly. He looked at her, confused by the raging look on her face. Alicia sighed and got up from her seat to put out a small p***e of paper from her bookbag.
