Horrible Science #9. The Fight for Flight

1. How can a plane fly? How do their wings work? Write its principle. (see 14~15p)

Some air pushes the plane up and down. And plane’s tail and wings control them.

Then the air pressure under the wing lifts the wing higher to fly the sky.

Plane stays up with the help of tiny air molecules.

2. Why can’t humans fly? What are the differences between birds and humans? (see 26p)

Human’s body is too heavy to fly as birds. Birds have feathers powerful chest and muscles, lightweight bones, and air spaces store extra air to breathe but human don’t.

(If human can fly, we must need very big wings to carry us.)

3. How do hot-air balloons fly? Why did Pilâtre de Rozier fail on his mission? (see 47p, 56p)

There are two airs, hot airs and cold airs they convection each other so the hot air goes up and cold air goes down. And if you heat the air more high, the hot-air balloon goes up and up.

But if you don’t heat the hot- air balloon, it’ll goes down and down.

4. What is a petrol engine? Who invented it? How does it work? Write the details. (see 79p)

A petrol engine is an internal combustion engine with spark-ignition, designed to run on petrol and similar volatile fuels. It was invented by German inventor Nicolaus August Otto in 1876.

It’s convenience to use and almost everybody in the world use this engine.

5. Write the record that Wright brother’s made with Flyer 2 and Flyer 3. What were their problems? (see 89~90p)

Flyer 2 and 3 flied 66km and reached the dizzy height of 110meters. The problem were the planes had no brakes, no undercarriage wheels, no safety belts.

6. Write three of the facts listed in the book that you find interesting. Why is the tail rotor important in the helicopter? (see 96~99p)

The tail rotor is important in helicopter because if a helicopter had one set of rotors it would spin the opposite direction as the blades and everyone would get sick.

Horrible Science #9. The Fight for Flight

1. How can a plane fly? How do their wings work? Write its principle. (see 14~15p)

Some air rushes over and some rushes under the wings.

The air molecules passing over the curved top of the wing have further to go than the air molecules passing under the wing. This makes them speed up.

As they speed up, They become more widely spaced.

The air molecules have to fill in everywhere. So the air molecules that passing under the wing goes up of the wing. And when the air molecules go up, it makes plane fly.

2. Why can’t humans fly? What are the differences between birds and humans? (see 26p)

They have powerful chest muscles power wings

Air spaces Store extra air to breathe.

     Hollow light weight bones.

3. How do hot-air balloons fly? Why did Pilâtre de Rozier fail on his mission? (see 47p, 56p)

Hot air has the quality that goes up. The burner makes air hot, and it will go up. So air balloon fly.

Pilâtre de Rozier wanted to fly the Channel after Blanchard beat him. Trouble is , he wanted to do it in a combined hot-air and hydrogen balloon. When the balloon burst into flames all people who was riding balloon died.

4. What is a petrol engine? Who invented it? How does it work? Write the details. (see 79p)

Petrol and air squirts into cylinder.

     Spark sets fire to fuel.

Explosion pushes piston down which turns the shaft.

Piston is sucked upwards pushing out waste gases.

5. Write the record that Wright brother’s made with Flyer 2 and Flyer 3. What were their problems? (see 89~90p)

Record about Flyer 2 and Flyer 3.

l  Fly 66 km.

l  Reach the dizzy height of 110 metres.

     Their problems.

l  No brakes.

l  No undercarriage wheels.

l  No safely belt.

l  The only way women could fly in them was with their legs tied together.

6. Write three of the facts listed in the book that you find interesting. Why is the tail rotor important in the helicopter? (see 96~99p)

If a helicopter had only main rotors, it would spin in the opposite direction as the blades and we can’t use it.

1. How can a plane fly? How do their wings work? Write its principle. (see 14~15p)

The air pressure under the wing lifts the wing ( and the plane ) higher. Every plane in the world stays up with the help of tiny air molecules.

2. Why can't humans fly? What are the differences between birds and humans? (see 26p)

The humans don't have 28 meter square wings or 122cm thick chest muscles, hollow light weight bones. The differences between bird and us is that bird is developed for flying so they have wings but humans don't have wings.

3. How do hot-air balloons fly? Why did Pilatre de Rozier fail on his mission? (see 47p, 56p)

Air is heated by burner. Heat gives the air molecules more energy so they travel faster and further. They push against the sides of ballon, filling them out.

4. What is a petrol engine? Who invented it? How does it work? Write the details. (see 79p)

The petrol engine is  The petrol engine was invented in 1883 by German Gottlieb Daimler. It is vital for planes because it was powerful enough to power plane propellers and provide the trust they need to fly but it was light enough to weight the plane down. The only problem was that petrol engine burns easily.

5. Write the record that Wright brother's made with Flyer 2 and Flyer 3. What were their problems? (see 89~90p)

They flow 66km and reach the dizzy hight of 110 meters but the Wright brother's plane were fearsomely dangerous fliers they had no brakes, no undercarriage wheels, no safety belt.

6. Write three of the facts listed in the book that you find interesting. Why is the tail rotor important in the helicopter? (see 96~99p)

The tail rotor is important in the helicopter because if a helicopter had one set of rotors it would spin the opposite direction as the blades and everyone would get sick. Helicopters often have tail rotors that push the tail in the same direction as the main rotors. This stops the craft spinning and saves on the sick bags.
