음악 하면 뭐가 제일 먼저 떠오르세요? 베토벤의 교향곡, 아니면 즐겨듣는 GOD의 노래? 악기 한 두 개쯤 연주를 하실 수 있는 분도 계실 것이고 그저 듣는 것만으로도 흥에 겨워 어깨를 들썩이시는 분도 계시겠죠. 개인마다 취향은 조금씩 다르겠지만 아름다운 음악소리가 흘러나오는데 귀를 막고 짜증을 내실 분은 없을 거에요. 물론 소음에 가까운 음악은 예외일 수도 있구요. 국민 학교 시절, 음악시간이면 선생님 풍금소리에 맞춰 노래를 부르고 캐스터네츠, 템버린, 트라이앵글로 리듬을 맞추곤 했죠. 멜로디언, 피리, 실로폰, 하모니카 등으로 실제 가락을 연주해보기도 하구요. 장 단조니 높은음, 낮은음, 악상기호를 배우는 이론시간은 어렵고 따분하기도 했지요. 제가 오늘 소개해드리려는 'Music'(First Discovery)책은 새로운 시각으로 음악을 이해하고 종류별로 악기를 접근해 가는데 안성맞춤입니다.
자 이제 책을 들여다볼까요.
우리가 일상에서 흔히 접하는 다양한 자연의 소리, 그 자체가 음악일 수 있다는 사실, 놀라운 발견 아닐까요? 비발디의 '사계'를 들어보면 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울을 어떻게 그렇게 훌륭하게 표현해냈지 놀랍기만 합니다.
바람소리를 한 번 들어보세요. 따뜻한 봄날 산들산들 부는 바람이 있는가하면 모든 것을 삼켜버릴 듯한 폭풍. 참 다양합니다. 천둥치는 소리, 폭포수가 떨어지는 소리, 딱따구리가 나무를 쪼아대는 소리, 벌이 윙윙거리는 소리, 귀뚜라미 우는소리...
개가 짖고 고양이가 우는소리도 또한 음악입니다.
공기를 불어넣고, 두드리고, 문지르고, 가볍게 치거나 현(현악기 줄)을 퉁기면 만들지 못할 소리가 없습니다. 다양한 악기가 내는 소리들도 결국 이 범주를 벗어나진 못합니다.
한 옥타브를 연주할 수 있는 너무도 예쁜 나무실로폰이네요. 그런데 왜 각각의 바(나무막대기)의 길이가 다를까요? 맞아요. 높이가 다른 각각의 음을 내기 위해서 이지요.
실로폰의 나무 막대기는 음계의 다른 음을 내기 위해 길이가 다양합니다.
How do you play the xylophone?

집에 있는 유리잔과 스푼을 이용해 water xylophone을 만들어볼까요? 여덟 개의 잔을 일렬로 늘어놓고 물의 양을 달리해 채워보세요. 물이 많이 채워질수록 더 낮은 음을 내는 걸
확인하실 수 있어요.
유리잔들을 각각 물의 양을 달리해 채워 스푼으로 부드럽게 두드리면 다른 음이 납니다.
일렬의 유리잔들이 하나의 악기를 만들어냅니다.
피아노는 어떻게 소리를 낼까요? 피아노 뚜껑을 열어보면 그 해답을 얻으실 수 있어요.
피아노 뚜껑 안에는 다양한 길이의 수많은 선들이 있는데 우리가 건반을 누르면 해머(두드리는 물체)가 선을 두드려 그 건반에 해당하는 소리를 내게 됩니다.
그랜드 피아노는 선이 수평으로 놓여있고, 일반가정에 가지고 계신 업라이트 피아노는 수직으로 선이 나열되어있어요. 그랜드피아노나 업라이트 피아노는 선이 수평이나 수직이냐만 다를 뿐 연주되는 방식은 똑같습니다. 참 피아노 같은 건반악기는 keyboard instruments라
고 합니다.
콘서트용 그랜드 피아노에서 작은 업라이트 피아노에 이르기까지 모든 피아노는 같은 방식으로 소리를 냅니다.

자, 다음은 현악기(stringed instruments)입니다.
현악기는 크기가 다양합니다.
활은 로진(송진같은 것)으로 부드럽게 한 말총을 달아 만들어요.
현악기는 보통 활로 현을 가로질러 켜 연주하지요.
줄(현)이 두꺼워질수록 현악기몸체가 커질수록 소리를 내는 음역은 낮아집니다.
손가락으로 현을 튕기는 연주법은 피치카토(pizzicato)라고 합니다.
viola는 바이올린족(族) 중 테너 악기에 해당하는 현악기로 바이올린과 모양은 비슷하지만, 몸통의 길이가 바이올린보다 5㎝ 정도 큰 37~43㎝이구요, cello는 정식 명칭은 violoncello이고 4개의 현(絃)을 가진 바이올린족(族) 악기입니다. double bass는 contrabass,
string bass, bass fiddle, bull fiddle이라고도 하고 바이올린족(族) 중 가장 낮은 음을 내며, 첼로보다 한 옥타브 낮은 현악기이구요.

6현을 가진 이 클래식 기타는 운반케이스안에 안전하게 자리하고 있어요.
기타리스트는 현을 튕기거나 꽉 눌러가며 연주를 해요.
튕길 때 손가락이 상할 수 있기 때문에 주로 픽(pick)을 사용합니다.(엄지손가락과 다른 손가락사이에 끼워 사용하지요)

여러분 보시기에 전자기타는 클래식기타와 뭔가 다르지요?
전자기타는 움푹들어간 구멍이 없어요. 그 구멍은 소리를 증폭시키는 효과가 있는데 전자기타는 전기앰프(증폭기)에 연결해 사용합니다.

관악기(wind instruments)는 구멍이 몇 개씩 난 관으로 되어있어요.
관속으로 바람을 불어넣으면 공기가 진동하면서 음을 만들어내요.
구멍을 막으면 결과적으로 관이 길어지는 효과가 돼 낮은 음이 나지요.
참 다양한 관악기들이 있네요. 하나씩 살펴보죠.

* Flageolet-'파이프' 또는 '테이버 파이프'라는 뜻의 고대 프랑스어 flageol에서 유래한 리코더와 비슷한 관악기.
플루트(휘슬 플루트라고도 함)의 일종인데, 취구에 불어넣은 공기가 관의 공깃길(duct)을 통해 파이프 안 구멍의 가장자리를 쳐서 소리를 낸다.

* Descant recorder-8개의 구멍이 있는 플루트의 일종으로 높은 음높이를 내는 악기

풀 잎사귀를 양손 엄지손가락사이에 쥐고 불어보세요. 풀잎사귀가 진동을 하면서 음을 내요.
이게 바로 리드악기의 원리라고 할 수 있어요.
리드 악기를 하나 만들었군요.
모든 리드 악기엔 리드가 있습니다.

클라리넷,오보에,바순,소프라노색소폰은 다 리드악기에 속하죠.

금관악기에 리드가 없어요. 대신 입술을 진동시키는 법을 익혀야합니다.
Sousaphone같은 몇몇 금관악기는 관이 너무 길어 비틀어 꼬아지기도 했어요.(꽈리를 틀었다고 해야하나요?) 관이 너무 길고 무거우니 이런 금관악기를 지니고 다니려면 그런 모양일 수 밖에요...

이 세상 어디에나 리듬이 존재해요. 잔가지들이 부딪히는 소리, 심장박동이 뛰는 소리 등 다양하지요.
타악기는 춤출 때 리듬을 맞추고 음악을 만드는데 끊임없이 사용되어 왔어요.
리듬을 만들려고 두드리고 치는 악기를 타악기(Percussion instruments)라고 하지요.
재즈밴드나 팝 그룹이 사용하는 드럼장비세트는 전통적인 타악기와는 다릅니다.
한사람의 연주자가 드럼장비세트를 다 연주해요. 심벌즈, 사이드드럼과 네 개의 톰톰(스틱으로 치는 현대의 큰 드럼)뿐 아니라 발로 페달을 밟아 커다란 베이스드럼까지요.
오케스트라는 그 자체를 하나의 악기라고 할 수 있어요.
지휘자는 전체 관현악단의 음악이 어떠해야 하는 가를 알죠.
단원들이 호흡을 맞춰(박자를 맞춰) 연주하도록 조절해가며 조화로움을 이끌어내요.
오케스트라에서 온갖 악기를 볼 수 있어요. 현악기, 관악기, 타악기, 금관악기. 단원들은 앞에 놓인 악보를 보고 그대로 곡을 연주합니다.
지휘자와 오케스트라 단원들이 혼연일체가 될 때 비로소 작곡자의 음악이 빛을 발휘하게 되는 거지요. (새로운 생명체로 재 탄생 된다고도 할 수 있겠죠.)
전세계에는 정말 다양한 악기와 음악이 존재해요.

나무상자와 고무밴드로 현악기를 만들어보세요.

빈유리병에 다른 종류의 씨앗을 넣고 흔들어 리듬을 만들어봐요.
뭐니뭐니해도 우리 자신의 목소리만큼 신비스런 악기가 또 있을까요?
집에 있는 주방기구나 장난감을 모두 꺼내놓고 아이와 리듬에 맞춰 신나게 노래를 불러보세요. 내 아이의 목소리, 듣고만 있어도 저절로 행복한 미소가 지을 수 있어요.
