예전에 보라카이에 휴가를 갔다가 탈이 나서 혼쭐이 난 적이 있습니다.
식중독으로 인하여 온 몸이 춥고 구토와 함께 뿌지직이 동시 다발적으로 진행되어 일단 의사를 불렀지요.
증상을 영어로 설명하는데, 뭐 쿠토니, 열이니 하는 증상 등은 뭐 어렵지 않게 할 수 있었습니다.
그런데, 뿌지직 현상의 단어가 생각이 안나는 것입니다.
dia~로 시작했던 것 같은데, diamond도 아니고, dialog도 아니고...
계속 의사 앞에서 "다이아~ 다이아~" 하다가
에라 모르겠다 "water sheet"으로 표현했던 옛 기억이 떠오릅니다. (식사 중이시던 분이시라면 죄송!)
그 이후 diarrhea라는 단어는 절대 잊어버리지 않았다는 아름답고도 슬픈 전설이 있습니다.

사실 일상회화는 별로 어렵지는 않은데,
병원과 같이 좀 전문적인 용어가 들어가면 어렵게 느껴지기 마련입니다.
체온계니, 청진기니, 처방전이니 등과 같이 말이지요.

자~ 어찌되었건, 지금 이야기가 좀 다른 곳으로 줄줄 세기는 했지만!!
오늘은 아이들과 함께 병원에서 사용할 수 있는 표현 등을 익혀 보도록 하겠습니다.

Going to the Hospital

귀가 아픈 Ben이 병원에 입원하여 간단한 수술을 받는 이야기가 나옵니다.
진찰 - 입원 - 수술 - 회복 - 퇴원까지의 과정들이 그려집니다.

주요 표현 : Mrs. Bell takes Ben to see Doctor Small.
                  Ben needs to have an operation on his ear.
                  He isn't allowed to eat anything for six hours.
                  The nurse takes Ben's temperature.
                  Ben can sleep soundly during the operation because of
                  the anaesthetic.
                  Ben is ready to go home.

Going to the Doctor

오늘따라 아이들 상태가 모두 좋지 않네요.
Jenny는 기침을 하고, Jack은 팔이 아프다 하구요.
막내 Joey는 예방접종을 할 때가 된 것 같습니다.

주요 표현 : Mom phones the doctor and makes an appointment.
                  The appointment for Jack is at 2 o'clock.
                  Joey needs to have his immunization.
                  The doctor examines(checks) Jack.
                  The doctor puts Jack's arm in a sling.
                  The doctor listens to Jenny's breathing with a
                  stethoscope.
                  Mom gives the pharmacist the prescription.
                  Mom gives Jenny a spoonful of medicine.

Going to the Dentist

충치가 생기면 이를 때운다고 하지요?
참 신기하게도 영어에서도 비슷한 표현을 사용합니다.
아이와 치과에 갔을 때 사용할 수 있는 표현과 건강한 치아를 위해
할 수 있는 일들에 대해 알아봅니다.

주요 표현 : They go to see the dentist.
             Jessie has her teeth checked.
             She opens her mouth wide.
             She can rinse out her mouth.
             Jake has a filling.
             Jake's tooth should be numbed.
             The dentist gives him an injection.
             He drills away the bad part of the tooth.
             The nurse keeps it dry with a suction pipe.

1. Going to the Hospital
1) 검이경 - An otoscope is a medical device which is used to look into ears.
2) 수술 - An operation is a medical procedure to repair damage or disease in a living body.
3) 체온 - Temperature means the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment.
4) 혈압 - The blood pressure is the pressure of the blood within the arteries.
5) 청진기 - A stethoscope is an instrument used to transmit low-volume sounds to the ear of the listener.
6) 마취제 - Anaesthetic is a substance that doctors use to stop you feeling pain during an operation.
7) 이통 - An earache is sharp, dull, or throbbing pain in one or both ears.

2. Going to the Doctor
1) 기침 - You often cough when you are ill, or when you are nervous or want to attract someone's attention.
2) 예약(약속) - An appointment is an arrangement to do something or meet someone at a particular time
and place.
3) 예방접종 - Immunizations work by stimulating the immune system, the natural disease-fighting
system of the body.
4) 접지름(삠) - "sprained" means to injure (a joint) by a sudden twist.
5) 체온계 - A thermometer is an instrument for measuring temperature.
6) 후두 - Your throat is the back of your mouth and the top part of the tubes.
7) 기관지염 - A chest infection is an infection of the airways leading down to the lungs.
8) 약 - Medicine is the treatment of illness and injuries by doctors and nurses.
9) 처방전 - A prescription is the paper on which your doctor writes an order for medicine.
10) 소아마비 - Polio is a serious infectious disease which often makes people unable to use their legs.
11) 약국 - A pharmacy is a shop or a department in a shop where medicines are sold or given out.
12) 약사 - A pharmacist is a person who is qualified to prepare and sell medicines.

3. Going to the Dentist
1) 치과의사 - A dentist is a person who is qualified to examine and treat people's teeth.
2) 치통 - Toothache is pain in one of your teeth.
3) 잇몸 - Your gums are the pink flesh inside your mouth, which your teeth grow out of.
