▶Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
전 수현이가 동물들이 나오는 동화책을 좋아하기 때문에 Brown bear와 너무 비슷하지 않나 하는 생각을 하면서 Polar Bear를 구입했답니다. 그런데 테이프를 듣고는 구입하길 잘 했구나하는 생각이 들었어요. 우선 노래가 아주 흥겹구요. 동물들의 소리를 직접 들을 수가 있어 아이들도 좋아한답니다.
노래 없이 엄마가 읽어 주기엔 약간 심심해서 테이프를 몇 번 함께 들은 후 거기 나오는 멜로디를 흥얼거리며 들려 주면 좋아하더군요. 우리 수현이는 아직 어려서 그런지 테이프를 들으며 책을 함께 집중해서 보지는 못하거든요.
그래서 제가 안되는 발음이지만 테이프를 열심히 듣고 비슷하게 하려고 노력하는 중입니다.
우선 이책에는 평소에 잘 쓰지않는 각 동물의 소리를 나타나는 단어들이 꽤 있어요. 그 단어들부터 살펴볼까요?
① roaring는 호랑이나 사자등이 으르렁거리는 소리.(사람이 큰 소리로 고함치는 걸 나타내요)
② snort는 콧김을 뿜다. (사람이 콧방귀를 뀌거나 씩씩거리다.)
③ fluting은 명사 flute(플루트,피리)에서 파생되어 피리같은 소리를 낼 때 쓰여요.
④ bray는 〔나귀,말 따위의〕시끄러운 울음 소리를 뜻해요. (시끄러운 잡담소리나 나팔소리를 뜻하기도 해요.)
⑤ hiss는 뱀이 내는 소리를 나타낼 때 많이 쓰는 표현이죠.
⑥ trumpet은 트럼펫,나팔이라는 명사인데 〔코끼리 따위가〕나팔같은 소리를 낸다는 동사로도 쓰여요.
⑦ snarl은〔개,늑대 따위가〕으르렁거리는 소리인데 roar보다는 작은 느낌으로 쓰여요.
⑧ yelp는 날카롭게 비명을 지르듯이 우는 걸 말한답니다.
⑨ bellow도 큰 소리로 울부짖는 걸 말해요.
⑩ whistling은 휘파람,호각을 부는 소리를 말해요.
각 동물이 내는 소리를 들으며 단어를 생각한다면 그 의미를 잘 이해할 수 있을 거에요. 동물원에서 직접 동물을 보고, 소리를 들어 볼 수 있다면 더 좋겠죠.
