where the wild things are는 우리나라에서도 시공사에서 "괴물들이 사는 나라"라는 번역으로
판매되고 있습니다. 특히 이책은 남자아이들이 좀더 선호하는 책으로, 남자아이들의 장난스러움과 엄마의 사랑을 느끼게하는 결말은 책을 읽은 후에도 많은 여운을 남겨줍니다.
이책은 특히 모리스 센닥 특유의 그림을 느끼게 해주며 괴물들의 모습이 무섭다기 보다는 약간은 우스꽝스러운 모습이어서 아이들에게 역할놀이를 하면서 읽어주면 더욱더 효과를 증대 시킬수 있는 글입니다. 괴물들의 모습이 따라 그리기 쉽게 되어있으니 보드지에 그림을 그려서 가면을 만들어 역할놀이를 하면서 영어대사와 행동을 따라 시키면 아주 재미있는 activity 시간이 될것입니다. 그리고 맥스의 분장시에는 거창한 늑대옷보다는 보자기로 꼬리를 달아주거나(혹은 양말로) 보드지로 왕관을 만들어 씌어주면 너무 좋아해요.
번역된 한글판 책들이 있기는 하지만 제 나름대로 번역을 해보았으니 여러분도 그냥 참고만 하세요.
지은이 모리스 센닥의 이야기는 suksuk 게시판에 올라와 있는 것을 올렸습니다.
Maurice Sendak은 미국에서 뿐 만 아이라 전 세계적으로 인정받는 유명한 그림책 작가로서,1928년 뉴욕에서 태어났습니다. 아버지가 들려주는 풍부한 옛날 이야기를 들으면서 자란 Maurice Sendak은 이미 다섯살 때에 장차 글을 쓰고, 그림 그리는 일을 하겠다고 결심했습니다.
1951년에 어린이 책의 삽화를 그릴 기회를 얻어 그때부터 그림책 작가의 길을 걷기 시작했습니다. 간결하지만 치밀한 그림과 풍부한 상상력이 어우러진 판타지를 창조하는 작가입니다.
In the Night Kitchen은 1971년 Caldecott Honor Book으로 선정되었고, 1970년엔 한스크리스찬 안데르센 상을 받았으며,Where The Wild Things Are(괴물들이 사는 나라)로 Caldecott상을 수상했습니다. 그밖에도 Alligators are all around, Animal Family, Kiss for
Little Bear, Outside Over There(문 밖 저 건너), Swine lake(돼지의 호수), Kenny's window(케니의 창문)등 많은 작품이 있습니다.
The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind
맥스는 그날밤 늑대옷을 입고 이런 나쁜짓을 했어요.

그래서 맥스는 “엄마를 잡아먹어 버릴꺼야” 라고 말했어요.
그래서 엄마는 저녁식사를 주지 않고 잠자리에 들게 했어요.

and in and out of weeks
and almost over a year
to where the wild things are
한주가 지나고
일년이 지나고
괴물들이 사는 곳에 도착했어요.
Mommy, this wild thing resembles dragon.
Dragon!
Have you ever seen a dragon?
Never!
But sometimes I saw this on the book.
and when he came to the place where the wild things are
they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
맥스가 괴물들이 사는곳에 도착했을 때
괴물들은 포효하고 무서운 이빨을 보이고
눈알을 굴리고 손톱으로 할퀴려고 했어요.
It looks so scared!
Why don’t you imitate these behaviors?
Shout your voice!
Show your teeth!
Roll your brown eyes!
Show your long nails!
You are a wild thing!
till Max said "BE STILL!"
and tamed them with the magic trick
of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once
and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
그러자 맥스가 말했어요. “멈춰”
그리고 눈한번 깜빡이지않고 그들의 노란눈을 바라보는 마법으로
그들을 길들이기 시작했어요.
그들은 맥스가 무서워서 맥스를 괴물들중에 최고라고 불렀죠.

그리고 괴물들의 왕으로 만들었어요.
그러자 맥스가 “지금부터 한바탕 소동을 벌이자” 라고 말했어요.
Mommy, one of the wild things bows to Max!
Because he is a king, he bows to Max.

"Now stop!" Max said and sent the wild things off to bed
without their supper. And Max the king of all wild things was lonely
and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.
Then all around from far away across the world
he smelled good things to eat
so he gave up being king of where the wild things are.
이제 그만! 저녁식사도 주지않고 괴물들을 잠자리에 들 게 했어요.
괴물들의 왕인 맥스는 곧 외로워졌어요. 그리고 자기를 가장
사랑해 주는 사람곁에 있고 싶었어요.
그리고 저 멀리서 좋은냄새를 맡았어요.

Wild things feel so hungry, too!
But the wild things cried, "Oh please don't go-
we'll eat you up-we love you so!"
And Max said, "No!"

but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye
그러나 괴물들이 울부짖었어요. 제발 가지마
그럼 너를 먹어버릴꺼야-너를 얼마나 사랑하는데
그러자 맥스가 말했어요, “싫어”
괴물들은 포효하고 무서운 이빨을 보이고
눈알을 굴리고 손톱으로 할퀴려고 했어요.
그러나 맥스는 자기배에 올라타고 손을 흔들었어요.
