Word Review (1) - Names of the Train Cars
caboose
보통 화물열차의 맨 뒷 칸에 자리하며, 승무원(train crew)용 차라고 할 수 있습니다.
tank car
기름(oil)을 싣고 다니는 차를 보면 tank가 달려있죠? 화물들 중 액체로 된 것(기름, 우유 등)을 담아가기 위한 car입니다.
hopper car
원래 hopper에 깔대기 모양의 것이라는 뜻이 있더군요. 아래가 오목하게 모 인 그리고 위가 열린 화물차입니다. 말려야 하는 곡물(grain) 등을 싣고 가네요.
cattle car
말 그대로 소나 송아지와 같은 가축을 실어 나르는 차입니다.
gondola car
아래가 넓적하고 위가 열린 차입니다. 물에 젖어도 되는 고철(steel)등을 실어 나릅니다. 그냥 직사각형 모양이구요. wagon처럼 생겼지요.
box car
박스처럼 꽉 막힌 차 칸 입니다. 컨테이너처럼. 물에 젖으면 안 되는 물건들을 실어 나르는 칸입니다. 다양한 용도로 쓰이겠죠? (종이 박스, 가구, 책, 장난감)
tender
탄수차라고 표현하구요, 석탄(coal)을 실어 나르는 칸입니다. 맨 앞의 steam engine 바로 뒤에서 연료를 실어 나르죠.

기관사가 타고 있는 맨 앞 칸이죠. 안에 fire box가 있어, 항상 석탄불이 활활 타오르고 있어요.

This red car is called 'caboose'. It is for the train crew to take a rest. Caboose is at the end of the train. What is next to the caboose? It's an orange tank car. And then, you could see a yellow hopper car. It looks just like a hopper. Here are a green cattle car, a blue gondolar car, a puple box car.
Let's turn to the next page. The train is moving. It moves so fast. The train is going through tunnels. Have you passed a tunnel before? It's dark and quite long.
The train is going by cities. Can you see the cities back of the train? What can you see in the city? There are tall buildings, cars, wide roads and many people. The train is crossing the trestles. The train is moving in darkness and daylight. The train is going, going, finally it has gone.
